Abstract

Abstract A class of hydrophilic prepolymers and hydrated polymer gels is disclosed which are characterized by their transparency, biocompatibility and resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption. At least 75%, preferably at least 90%, of the prepolymers are isocyanate-capped oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having molecular weight of about 7000-30,000. Essentially all of the hydroxyl groups of the diols or polyols are capped with polyisocyanate prior to formation of the hydrated polymer.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
The hydrated polymer gel of Claim 1 in which at least 90%, preferably 95% of said prepolymer units are polyisocyanate-capped oxyethylene-based diols or polyols.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
The hydrated polymer gel of Claims 1 or 2 in which the molecular weight of said diols or polyols prior to capping with polyisocyanate is at least 10,000, preferably from about 10,000 to about 20,000.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
The hydrated polymer gel of Claims 1 to 3 which comprises an antioxidation agent.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 89 words
A crosslinked hydrophilic, biocompatible hydrated polymer gel prepared by reacting together water and a prepolymer in a prepolymer-to-water ratio of about 1:1 to about 1:20, said prepolymer prepared by: (a) selecting diols or polyols, at least 75% of which are oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having molecular weights of about 7000 to about 30,000, and (b) reacting said diols or polyols with polyisocyanate at an isocyanate-to-hydroxyl ratio of about 1.8 to about 2.2 so that essentially all of the hydroxyl groups of said diols or polyols are capped with polyisocyanate.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 42 words
The hydrated polymer gel of Claim 5 in which said prepolymer is dissolved in an organic solvent selected from acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, dichloromethane, or mixtures thereof, prior to reacting with water.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 48 words
The hydrated polymer gel of Claims 5 or 6 which is in the form of a coating, and is prepared by depositing the prepolymer-organic solvent solution on a coatable substrate, removing excess organic solvent and then reacting the prepolymer with water to promote crosslinking on the substrate surface.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 19 words
The hydrated polymer gel of Claims 5 to 7 in which said ratio is between about 1:5 and 1:15.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 37 words
The hydrated polymer gel of Claim 5 which is formed by mixing together water and said prepolymer, coating the resulting solution onto a coatable substrate prior to gelation of said solution, and removing excess water by evaporation.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 69 words
A prepolymer for preparing a hydrophilic, biocompatible gel characterized by transparency and by resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption, said prepolymer consisting of oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having molecular weights of about 7000 to about 30,000, said diols or polyols having essentially all of the hydroxyl groups capped with polyisocyanate, and said prepolymer having the ability to gel water upon polymerization in prepolymer-to-water ratios of about 1:1 to about 1:20.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 69 words
A prepolymer for preparing a hydrophilic, biocompatible gel characterized by transparency and by resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption, said prepolymer consisting of oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having molecular weights of about 7000 to about 30,000, said diols or polyols having essentially all of the hydroxyl groups capped with polyisocyanate, and said prepolymer having the ability to gel water upon polymerization in prepolymer-to-water ratios of about 1:1 to about 1:20.
