Abstract

Abstract For flickerless stereoscopic display, a liquid crystal (21) with orthogonally polarized columns, determined by the electrodes (26, 27, 28) and the polarizer (22), is placed in front of a light-sensitive pick-up unit CCD (23) in a 1:1 relation, on which two orthogonally polarized sub-pictures (13', 14') are projected. On the display side, the sub-pictures (32) are read via an LCD (36) by means of orthogonally polarized glasses (42, 43) so that the pixels, for a line of the stereoscopic display, are provided alternatively for the right and left eye.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 86 words
A display device for stereoscopic picture display in which information relating to sub-pictures is applied to the display device for displaying a picture composed of the sub-pictures in accordance with a fixed pattern, characterized in that the device comprises a liquid crystal layer between a picture-generating device and a transparent supporting plate, in which layer unidirectionally polarized light enters from the picture-generating device and in which the direction of polarization is changed at areas determined by the fixed pattern or a pattern which is complementary thereto.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 86 words
A display device for stereoscopic picture display in which information relating to sub-pictures is applied to the display device for displaying a picture composed of the sub-pictures in accordance with a fixed pattern, characterized in that the device comprises a liquid crystal layer between a picture-generating device and a transparent supporting plate, in which layer unidirectionally polarized light enters from the picture-generating device and in which the direction of polarization is changed at areas determined by the fixed pattern or a pattern which is complementary thereto.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
A display device as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the direction of polarization is rotated through substantially 90° or 270°.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
A display device as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the liquid crystal layer comprises a twisted nematic liquid crystal or a ferro-electric liquid crystal.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 50 words
A display device as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the picture-generating comprises an electro-optical medium arranged between a first and a second supporting plate at least one of which is transparent and in that the first and the second supporting plate are provided with control electrodes.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 19 words
A display device as claimed in Claim 4, characterized in that the electro-optical medium is a liquid crystal layer.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 39 words
A display device as claimed in Claim 5, characterized in that the liquid crystal layer rotates the direction of polarization of incident polarized light, dependent on the thickness of said layer and on the wavelength of incident polarized light.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
A display device as claimed in Claim 6, characterized in that the device comprises an extra liquid crystal layer between two supporting plates for compensating the effects of unwanted birefringence.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 26 words
A display device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims 2 to 7, characterized in that the first supporting plate comprises a silicon substrate.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
A display device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, characterized in that the fixed pattern comprises columns of pixels which are separated by complementary columns of pixels.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 23 words
A display device as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 9, characterized in that the fixed patern constitutes a chessboard-like pattern.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 103 words
A pick-up device for stereoscopic display in which sub-pictures polarized in different directions are imaged through an optical system, characterized in that the pick-up device comprises a light-sensitive pick-up unit provided with picture pick-up elements corresponding to pixels, a liquid crystal layer between two supporting plates being arranged between the optical system and the memory device, in which layer the direction of polarization of at least one of the sub-pictures can be changed at areas determined by a fixed pattern or a pattern which is complementary thereto, and in that a polarizer is arranged between the liquid crystal layer and the pick-up unit.
Claim 13
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 31 words
A pick-up device as claimed in Claim 11, characterized in that the optical system comprises a double lens system with mutually perpendicularly oriented polarizers being arranged in the associated light paths.
Claim 15
