Abstract

Abstract The automatic access of statistical processes running on a computer is made possible by the display of graphic icons corresponding to the processes. A user can manipulate data in a table and then select a view function which results in the display of icons corresponding to potentially valid statistical processes for the data in the table. By marking data in the table, the user causes only those icons corresponding to valid statistical processes valid for the marked data to be displayed in a manner which allows selection of the icons. If the user then selects one of these icons, the system automatically makes the corresponding statistical calculation corresponding to the selected icon for the marked data. The user may then place the result of the calculation on the display screen by dragging the selected icon to the desired location on the screen.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 84 words
A technique for the automatic access of statistical processes running as a first task on a computer via selection of a graphic icon while viewing and manipulating data in tables under a second task on a computer display screen comprising the steps of: monitoring a user input requesting the display of potentially valid statistical processes for the data displayed on the computer display screen; and displaying the potentially valid statistical processes as graphical icons on the same display screen as the data in tables.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 84 words
A technique for the automatic access of statistical processes running as a first task on a computer via selection of a graphic icon while viewing and manipulating data in tables under a second task on a computer display screen comprising the steps of: monitoring a user input requesting the display of potentially valid statistical processes for the data displayed on the computer display screen; and displaying the potentially valid statistical processes as graphical icons on the same display screen as the data in tables.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 58 words
The technique for the automatic access of statistical processes as recited in claim 1 further comprising the steps of: monitoring a user input to mark a subset of the data displayed on the display screen; and highlighting a marked subset of data and simultaneously highlighting those icons corresponding to valid statitistical processes for the marked subset of data.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
The technique for automatic access of statistical processes as recited in claim 2 further comprising the step of automatically updating said icons based upon changes to selections of data by the user.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 42 words
The technique for the automatic access of statistical processes as recited in claim 2 further comprising the steps of: monitoring a user input to select a highlighted icon; and computing a statistical value for a process corresponding to a selected highlighted icon.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 56 words
The technique for the automatic access of statistical processes as recited in claim 4 further comprising the steps of: monitoring a user input to drag a replica of the selected highlighted icon to a user determined position on the display screen; and displaying the computed statistical value at the user determined position on the display screen.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 33 words
The technique for the automatic access of statistical processes as recited in claim 4 further comprising the step of automatically recomputing the statistical value based upon changes in the marked subset of data.
