Abstract

Abstract A method and apparatus for minimizing skin irritation and iontophoretic burns with electrode (10) use by interposing, within an electrical circuit, an ion-exchange material (18) or a sacrificial electrode between an electrical power source (17) and a patient's skin, to remove caustic or acidic ions electrolytically generated by the application of a current through the circuit. The ion-exchange material (18) may include an ion-exchange resin, retained within a housing (12) or an electroconductive gel matrix. The sacrificial electrode is formed of a corrosive metal which oxides or reduces the acidic or caustic ions. Various electrode (10) structures incorporating the ion-exchange material (18) and/or the sacrificial electrode are disclosed.

Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
The bioelectrode as claimed in claim 5, wherein said dispensing means includes an absorbent pad.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 31 words
A bioelectrode as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein said ion conversion means includes an ion-exchange resin in fluid communication with said contacting means and the patient's skin.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
