Branched copolymers and their preparation process
Abstract
Abstract Stellate-branched, optionally hydrogenated copolymers of vinylaromatic hydrocarbons and conjugated dienes, prepared by anionic solution polymerisation by means of organoalkali metal initiators and subsequent coupling with a polyfunctional coupling agent, the copolymers having a crosslinked centre which is itself a copolymer of polyvinylaromatic hydrocarbons and monovinylaromatic hydrocarbons in a weight ratio of from 1:7 to 1:60, are prepared by a process in which, after virtually complete reaction of the monomers, the linear copolymers obtained, containing active, terminal lithium-carbon bonds, are coupled with addition of a mixture of monovinylaromatic hydrocarbon and polyvinylaromatic hydrocarbon in a weight ratio of from 7:1 to 60:1, and this mixture is metered in continuously or in portions over a relatively long period.
