Abstract
Abstract An interactive graphics image editor. Editing commands are interactively inputted to a computer by a user to form an image transformation function. The commands define how to alter the pixels of the image and the portions of the image to alter. The editor parses the commands and generates a program for performing the image transformation. The program is then executed, either by interpreting it or by first compiling it on-the-fly. In either case, each affected pixel of the image is transformed in accordance with the command statements.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
120 words
A method of controlling a computer to edit a graphics image stored in a first file composed of an ordered set of pixels by altering the states of some or all of the pixels, said method being characterized by the steps of interactively receiving as input to the computer an image transformation function in the form of one or more command statements composed according to a set of syntactic rules and defining the affected pixels of said image to be altered and mathematical relationships for altering the affected pixels, wherein the relationships may include dependencies on the states of one or more other pixels of the image, and automatically generating a sequence of program steps to perform the transformation function.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
120 words
A method of controlling a computer to edit a graphics image stored in a first file composed of an ordered set of pixels by altering the states of some or all of the pixels, said method being characterized by the steps of interactively receiving as input to the computer an image transformation function in the form of one or more command statements composed according to a set of syntactic rules and defining the affected pixels of said image to be altered and mathematical relationships for altering the affected pixels, wherein the relationships may include dependencies on the states of one or more other pixels of the image, and automatically generating a sequence of program steps to perform the transformation function.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
35 words
The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of interactively performing the transformation function by interpreting each program step and performing the step according to the interpretation individually for affected pixels of the image.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
36 words
The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of interactively performing the transformation function by compiling the program steps into a machine language program and executing the compiled program for affected pixels of the image.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
58 words
The method of claim 2 or claim 3 further comprising the steps of storing the altered pixel states in a second file without altering the pixel states of the first file, and interchanging the first and second files at completion of the program steps so that the edited image is available for incremental editing in succeeding editing stages.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
28 words
The method of claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the dependencies may further comprise dependencies on pixel states of images stored in files other than the first file.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
27 words
The method of claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the step of performing includes random access to said one or more other pixels of the first image.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
23 words
The method of claim 5 wherein the step of performing includes random access to all pixels in all files defined by the dependencies.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
63 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the step of generating a sequence of program steps further comprises parsing the command statements, and generating a parse string of token values in response to the parsing as the sequence of program steps, wherein each token value represents either a numeric value or an operator to be applied to one or more of the numeric values.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
43 words
The method of claim 4 further comprising the step of interpreting the program defined by the parse string by sequentially reading each token from the parse string and performing the operation called for by the token for each affected pixel of the image.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
29 words
The method of claim 4 further comprising compiling the parse string into a machine language program and executing the machine language program for each affected pixel of the image.
