Über einen Taster in einer Reizleitung des Diagnosebusses sind Diagnose­funktionen anstoßbar, wobei die Diagnoseergebnisse über einen Blinkcode einer an der Fehlerlampenleitung angeschlossenen Fehlerlampe auslesbar sind. Die Fehlerausgabe erfolgt hierbei Fehler für Fehler und Steuergerät für Steuergerät streng se­quentiell. Um eine Diagnose eines Steuergeräts jederzeit abbrechen und zur Diagnose des nächsten Steuergeräts fortfahren zu können, wird eine neu definierte, besondere Signalgabe auf die Reizleitung gelegt. Durch eine Zuweisung eines bestimmten Informationsgehalts zu bestimmten Stellen des Blinkcodes und ein neues Testgerät wird die Diagnose, die Fehlerkennung und die Zuordnung der Fehler zu bestimmten Steuergeräten entschei­dend erleichtert und verbessert.
