Abstract

Abstract A method of inhibiting the growth of a virus, the DNA of the virus including the nucleic acid sequence 5′ACCXNNNPyCGGTXY3′, where each N, X and Y is independently, any nucleotide, and Py is C or T, the nucleic acid sequence being capable of binding to a protein encoded by the DNA of the virus, the protein, upon binding to the nucleic acid sequence, being capable of causing the enhancement of the transcription of DNA of the virus, the method including inhibiting the protein from binding to the nucleic acid sequence to repress the transcription of DNA of said virus to inhibit the growth of the virus.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 110 words
A method of inhibiting the growth of a virus characterised in that the DNA of the virus comprises the nucleic acid sequence 5′ACCXNNNPyCGGTXY3′, wherein each of N, X and Y independently represents any nucleotide, and Py represents C or T, the nucleic acid sequence being capable of binding to a protein encoded by the DNA of the virus, the protein, upon binding to the nucleic acid sequence, being capable of causing the enhancement of the transcription of DNA of the virus, the method comprising inhibiting the protein from binding to the nucleic acid sequence to repress the transcription of DNA of the virus to inhibit the growth of the virus.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 67 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the method comprises contacting the DNA of the virus with a nucleic acid of at least 14 base pairs that has a 14 base pair region of at least 80 percent homology with the nucleic acid sequence, the nucleic acid fragment binding to the protein and thereby preventing the protein from binding to the nucleic acid sequence.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method as claimed in claim 2 characterised in that the nucleic acid comprises the sequence 5′ACCXNNNPyCGGTXY3′, wherein each N, X and Y is, independently, any nucleotide, and Py is C or T.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method as claimed in claim 2 characterised in that the nucleic acid comprises the sequence 3′TGGVNNNPuGCCAVW5′ wherein each N, V and W is, independently, any nucleotide, and Pu is G or A.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 19 words
A method as claimed in claim 2 characterised in that the nucleic acid comprises 200 base pairs or less.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 11 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said virus is a papillomavirus.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said protein is a papillomavirus E2 protein.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 51 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the method comprises contacting the DNA of said virus with a blocking protein capable of binding to the nucleic acid sequence without causing an enhancement of the transcription, thereby preventing said protein encoded by the DNA of said virus from binding.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 31 words
The method of claim 8, wherein said protein comprises an amino acid sequence that is substantially similar to the amino acid sequence comprising the DNA binding domain of an E2 protein.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 116 words
The use of a substance for inhibiting a protein from binding to a nucleic acid sequence to repress the transcription of DNA of the virus to inhibit the growth of the virus, in a process for the preparation of an agent for inhibiting the growth of a virus, the DNA of the virus comprising the nucleic acid sequence 5′ACCXNNNPyCGGTXY3′ wherein each N, X and Y independently represent any nucleotide and P represents C or T, the nucleic acid sequence being capable of binding to a protein encoded by the DNA of the virus, the protein upon binding to the nucleic acid sequence, being capable of causing the enhancement of the transcription of DNA of the virus.
