Abstract

Abstract A high-pressure, continuous-delivery piston pump (4), controlled as a function of engine speed and load, supplies fuel to an accumulator (6) supplying injectors (2). On the intake side of the pump (4), there is provided a throttle (18) for metering the amount of fuel supplied by the pump (4). Via operating signals, the throttle (18) is regulated by an electronic control device (9) in such a manner as to supply the pump (4) and pressurize only the amount of fuel strictly required for operating the injectors (2) and the engine (1), thus eliminating any energy losses caused by fuel feedback to the tank (3), and drastically reducing fuel consumption.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 128 words
1) - A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine, particularly a Diesel engine, featuring injectors for each cylinder controlled by an electronic control device, and, upstream from the said injectors, a fuel accumulator supplying the said injectors and itself supplied by a continuous-delivery fuel pump controlled as a function of engine speed and load; characterised by the fact that, on the intake side of the said pump (4), there is provided a throttle (18) for metering the amount of fuel supplied by the said pump (4); and that, via operating signals, the said throttle (18) is regulated mechanically and/or by the said electronic control device (9) in such a manner as to supply the said pump (4) with no more than the required amount of fuel.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 128 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 80 words
2) - A fuel injection system as claimed in Claim 1, characterised by the fact that the said fuel pump is a high-pressure piston pump (4), which, together with the throttle (18) of a pre-delivery pump (16) operating on the same pump shaft (23), a low-pressure valve (17), and a check valve (19 and 20) located on one side between the said throttle (18) and the said pump (4), forms an enclosed unit (27) housed inside a casing (29) (Fig.2).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 47 words
3) - A fuel injection system as claimed in Claim 2, characterised by the fact that the said piston (34) of the said pump (4) is controlled by a cam (36) on the said pump shaft (23), controlled by the drive shaft via a gear (22) (Fig.2).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 85 words
4) - A fuel injection system as claimed in Claim 2, characterised by the fact that the said piston (34) of the said pump (4) is controlled by the cams (38) of a pump shaft in the form of a camshaft (37), on which the number of cams (38), and therefore the number of strokes of the said piston (34) of the said pump (4) per turn of the said shaft, depends on the number of injectors (2) on the system (Fig.s 3 and 3a).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 30 words
5) - A fuel injection system as claimed in Claim 1, characterised by the fact that the said throttle (18) is regulated mechanically via rods engaging directly with the same.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 53 words
6) - A fuel injection system as claimed in one of the foregoing Claims from 1 to 5, characterised by the fact that a pre-delivery pump (16) and low-pressure valve (17) are provided upstream from the said throttle (18) for bringing the fuel upstream from the said throttle (18) to a given pressure.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 24 words
7) - A fuel injection system as claimed in Claim 6, characterised by the fact that the said pre-delivery pump (16) is powered electrically.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 61 words
8) - A fuel injection system as claimed in one of the foregoing Claims from 1 to 7, characterised by the fact that a safety valve (13) is provided in a fuel feedback pipe (12) between the said injectors (2) and the said tank (3), for opening the said pipe (12) exclusively in the presence of other than normal operating pressure.
