Abstract
Abstract A panel heat exchanger comprises a generally planar panel having a pair of relatively thin unitary outer walls (26) formed from a composition of a thermoplastic polymer, especially a polyamide. The walls (26) which have thickness of less than 0.7 mm, are bonded together to form a labyrinth of fluid passages (34) between the walls. The passages (34) extend between inlet and outlet means (30) and occupy a substantial proportion of the area of the panel. The heat exchangers may be used in automobiles.

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim
57 words
A panel heat exchanger comprising a generally planar panel having a pair of unitary outer walls formed from a composition of a thermoplastic polymer, said walls being bonded together to define a labyrinth of fluid passages therebetween, such passages extending between inlet and outlet header areas and occupying a substantial proportion of the area of the panel.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
34 words
The panel heat exchanger of Claim 1 in which at least one of said outer walls is moulded with channels defining said labyrinth of fluid passages prior to bonding to the other outer wall.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
22 words
The panel heat exchanger of Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which at least one of said outer walls is a laminate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
27 words
The panel heat exchanger of Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which at least one of said walls includes a layer of material having high thermal conductivity.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
21 words
The panel heat exchanger of Claim 3 in which the laminate includes an outer layer of fabric having high tensile strength.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
21 words
The panel heat exchanger of Claim 3 in which the laminate includes an outer layer of material having high thermal conductivity.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
42 words
The panel heat exchanger of any one of Claims 1-6 in which the outer surface of at least one of the outer walls is textured to provide microturbulence in fluid passing at high velocity over the outer surface of the heat exchanger.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
39 words
The panel heat exchanger of any one of Claims 1-7 in which the inner surface of at least one of the outer walls is textured to provide microturbulence in fluid passing over the inner surface of the heat exchanger.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
22 words
The panel heat exchanger of any preceding claim in which the said outer walls having a thickness of less than 0.7 mm.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
24 words
The panel heat exchanger of any of Claims 1 to 8 in which the outer walls have a thickness of at least 0.12 mm.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
24 words
The panel heat exchanger of any of Claims 1 to 8 in which the outer walls have a thickness of 0.15 to 0.5 mm.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
16 words
The panel heat exchanger of any preceding claim in which the thermoplastic polymer is a polyamide.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
18 words
The panel heat exchanger of any one of Claims 1-11 in which the thermoplastic polymer is a polycarbonate.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
63 words
A process for the dissipation of heat from a fluid, comprising feeding said fluid to the inlet of a panel heat exchanger of Claim 1, passing a second fluid over the outer surface of the heat exchanger, said second fluid having a temperature less than that of the first fluid, and withdrawing fluid so cooled from the outlet of the panel heat exchanger.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim
22 words
The process of Claim 14 in which the panel heat exchanger has outer walls with a thickness of less than 0.7 mm.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim
22 words
The process of Claim 14 or Claim 15 in which the panel heat exchanger is formed from a composition of a polyamide.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim
22 words
The process of Claim 14 or Claim 15 in which the panel heat exchanger is formed from a composition of a polycarbonate.
