Abstract
Abstract An in-mold label for use with a blow molded high density polyethylene container or the like formed from a thin sheet of multicellular thermoplastic film composed of a biaxially extruded polyethylene/polystyrene copolymer. The in-mold label resists curling, wrinkling and crazing, has thermodynamic properties similar to those of the polyethylene container, and may be recycled along with the container.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
104 words
A method of producing an in-mold labeled plastic container comprising: supplying a sheet of multicellular thermoplastic film composed of a biaxially extruded polyethylene/polystyrene copolymer, said sheet being resistant to wrinkling, curling and crazing and having a surface configured to accept high quality printing; printing indicia on at least one surface of said sheet; cutting said sheet into a plurality of individual labels, each label bearing printed indicia; positioning one of said labels in a mold; blow molding a HDPE container within said mold such that said label adheres to the outer surface of the blow molded container; and removing said container from the mold.
Claim 2
Independent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
31 words
The method according to claim 1 including the step of providing said film with an acrylic bound china clay calcium carbonate pigmented coating for improving the printing characteristics of the sheet.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
31 words
The method according to claim 2 including the step of applying a heat activated adhesive to one surface of the sheet to improve the adherence of the label to the container.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
33 words
In a high density polyethylene container of the type produced by blow molding, the improvement in combination therewith comprising a multicellular thermoplastic film in-mold label adhered to the outer surface of said container.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
33 words
In a high density polyethylene container of the type produced by blow molding, the improvement in combination therewith comprising a multicellular thermoplastic film in-mold label adhered to the outer surface of said container.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
18 words
The container according to claim 4 wherein said thermoplastic film comprises a thin biaxially extruded polyethylene/polystyrene copolymer sheet.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
27 words
The container according to claim 5 wherein said sheet includes an acrylic bound china clay calcium carbonate pigmented coating for improving the printing characteristics of the label.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
23 words
The container according to claim 5 wherein said film has a density of about 0.77g/cm² and a tensile strength of about 36,000 kN/m².
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
22 words
The container according to claim 6 including a heat activated adhesive applied to the label for adhering the label to the container.
