Abstract

Abstract A method for producing high density, high strength carbon-carbon composite material, is provided by using (i) pitch-based infusible fibers, (ii) pitch-based carbon fibers having been carbonized at a temperature lower than 2200°C or (iii) structures, containing as a principal constituent, said fibers (i) or (ii) as a reinforcement material, impregnating said reinforcement material with a liquid carbonaceous material such as pitch or the like and then carbonizing said impregnated material and if necessary graphitizing said carbonized product.

Claim 2
Independent Claim 50 words
A method for producing high density, high strength carbon-carbon composite materials reinforced by carbon fibers which comprises impregnating (i) pitch based infusible fibers, (ii) pitch based carbonaceous fibers having been carbonized at a temperature lower than 2200°C or (iii) structures containing as a principal constituent said fibers (i) or (ii),
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
with a liquid carbonaceous material, as a precursor of carbon matrix and thereafter carbonizing or carbonizing- followed by graphitizing the resulting impregnated product in the atmosphere of an inert gas.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 30 words
with a liquid carbonaceous material, as a precursor of carbon matrix and thereafter carbonizing or carbonizing- followed by graphitizing the resulting impregnated product in the atmosphere of an inert gas.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 56 words
A method for producing a carbon-carbon composite material according to claim 1 in which said pitch based infusible fibers or said pitch based carbon fibers having been carbonized at a temperature lower than 2200°C show volume shrinkage of 5 - 60% by carbonization or carbonization followed by graphitization treatment based upon the volume before said treatment.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 127 words
A method for producing a carbon-carbon composite material according to claim 1 or 2 in which said pitch based infusible fibers or said pitch based carbon fibers having been carbonized at a temperature lower than 2200°C, have a tensile strength in the range of 50 - 2500 MPa, an elongation in the range of 0.5 - 8.0%, a tensile modulus of elasticity in the range of 4 - 400 GPa and capability of increasing their tensile strength and tensile modulus of elasticity to 1.1 times or more of the values of the preceding step, up to 1.5 GPa or more in tensile strength and 400 GPa or more in tensile modulus of elasticity, by the carbonization or carbonization followed by graphitization carried out thereafter under tensionless state.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 97 words
A method for producing a carbon-carbon composite material according to claim 1, 2 or 3 in which there is a relationship of Sm-Sf = 0 ∼ 45% between the volume shrinkage (Sf) of said pitch based insufible fibers or said pitch based carbon fibers carbonized at a temperature lower than 2200°C during the process of carbonization or carbonization followed by graphitization step, carried out thereafter and the volume shrinkage (Sm) of a liquid carbonaceous material such as a pitch or the like as a carbon matrix precursor during the process of carbonization or carbonization-followed by graphitization step.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 72 words
A method for producing a carbon-carbon composite material according to claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 in which a carbon-carbon composite material having a bulk density of 1.45 ∼ 2.05 g/cc is produced by one pass of impregnation of a liquid carbonaceous material such as pitch or the like, carbonization or carbonization followed by graphitization steps without repeating the secondary reinforcement process of impregnation followed by carbonization or carbonization and graphitization steps.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 69 words
A method for producing a carbon-carbon composite material according to claim 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 in which as a liquid carbonaceous material such as a pitch or the like, the same pitch as the raw material for producing pitch based infusible fibers or pitch based carbonaceous fibers carbonized at a temperature lower than 2200°C or a pitch which is an intermediate of said raw material is used.
