Claim 5
Dependent Claim 58 words
An oligomer as claimed in claim 1 wherein or in claim 3 wherein Ar² has the general formula -Ø-Y²-Ø-; in the said structures: Ø is the phenylene group; and Y² is (i) a direct link between the two phenylene groups, (ii) a divalent residue which includes one or more in-chain atoms, or (iii) a residue of general formula
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 35 words
wherein Y³, each of which may be the same or different is a group which activates the phenylene group to electrophilic attack; and Y⁴ is a group which deactivates the phenylene group to electrophilic attack.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 35 words
wherein Y³, each of which may be the same or different is a group which activates the phenylene group to electrophilic attack; and Y⁴ is a group which deactivates the phenylene group to electrophilic attack.

Claim 14
Dependent Claim 53 words
A process for the preparation of an oligomer containing in-chain aromatic residues which process comprises the step of reacting one or more aromatic compounds with an aldehyde or ketone in the presence of a suitable acid which is dissolvable homogeneously in the reaction mixture, is strong and has an anion of low nucleophilicity.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 53 words
A process for the preparation of an oligomer containing in-chain aromatic residues which process comprises the step of reacting one or more aromatic compounds with an aldehyde or ketone in the presence of a suitable acid which is dissolvable homogeneously in the reaction mixture, is strong and has an anion of low nucleophilicity.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process as claimed in claim 11 wherein the aromatic compound bears an alkyl, alkoxy, halo or phenoxy substituent.
