Abstract

Abstract In a user-interactive display-based system (FIG. 1), the present invention permits an automatic display of a repertoire of command items (FIG. 4) most likely to be utilized by a user, thus providing one-touch access to such items without requiring either explicit programming of a command repertoire or a search by the user through the history of previous commands. This is accomplished (FIG. 2) through the use of three heuristics which consider frequency of command use (300), recency of command use (310), and previously failed commands (320). These heuristics may be implemented either separately or together in the system.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 72 words
Apparatus (e.g., 107) for enabling a user to select commands for input to a command operated system, said apparatus characterized by means for listing commands (300, 310, 320, 410, 420, 430, 440) which are most likely to be selected by a user based on the past usage pattern of said commands and means operable by said user for selecting (FIG. 2) a command from said listing means for input to said system.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 72 words
Apparatus (e.g., 107) for enabling a user to select commands for input to a command operated system, said apparatus characterized by means for listing commands (300, 310, 320, 410, 420, 430, 440) which are most likely to be selected by a user based on the past usage pattern of said commands and means operable by said user for selecting (FIG. 2) a command from said listing means for input to said system.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said listing means utilizes a past command usage pattern based on the frequency selection of said commands (300, 410) over a predetermined period of time.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said frequency of selection of said commands is based on the current user's past usage pattern.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said listing means is characterized by recency list means (310, 430) for listing commands which have recently been selected by the user.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 38 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said listing means is characterized by retry list means (320, 430) for listing commands which have previously been selected by a user but which have failed to be executed by said system.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said listing means is characterized by saved list means (440) for listing commands which have been inputted by the user.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said listing means utilizes a past command usage pattern based on conditional probability (211) that a command has utility with present user activity.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 35 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said listing means utilizes a predetermined model of a system user (211) previously loaded into said system to list the commands most likely to be selected by said user.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said listing means lists commands which are part of frequently repeated sequences of commands entered by the user.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 69 words
A method of inputting user commands to a command operated system characterized by the steps of: listing commands (300, 310, 320, 410, 420, 430, 440) which are most likely to be selected for input to said system by a user based on the past usage pattern of said commands and user selecting (FIG. 2) of one or more commands presented during said listing step for input to said system.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 69 words
A method of inputting user commands to a command operated system characterized by the steps of: listing commands (300, 310, 320, 410, 420, 430, 440) which are most likely to be selected for input to said system by a user based on the past usage pattern of said commands and user selecting (FIG. 2) of one or more commands presented during said listing step for input to said system.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 10 wherein said listing step lists commands most frequently selected (300) over a predetermined period of time.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 10 wherein said listing step lists commands which have most recently been selected (310) by the user.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 30 words
The method of claim 10 wherein said listing step lists commands which have previously been selected (320) by a user but which have failed to be executed by said system.
