Abstract

Abstract Valve operating apparatus for an internal combustion engine in which plural intake valves (10a,10b) and exhaust valves (11a,11b) are associated with each cylinder. The respective valves are operated in one engine-operating condition in response to the action of a first set of cams (21,27) and in another engine-operating condition in response to the action of a second set of cams (22,28) coupled to the first cam set. The cams operating the intake valves impart a different valve operating action than those operating the exhaust valves.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 125 words
In an internal combustion engine having intake valve means and exhaust valve means, valve operating means for controlling the operation of said intake valve means and said exhaust valve means, comprising: camshaft means rotatable in synchronism with rotation of said engine; first cam follower means operatively connected to said intake valve means; second cam follower means operatively connected to said exhaust valve means; and cam means rotatably driven by said camshaft means including first cam means engaging said first cam follower means and second cam means engaging said second cam follower means; said first cam means and said second cam means containing cams having cam profiles for imparting movement to said intake valve means that differs from the movement imparted to said exhaust valve means.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 125 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 including means for selectively connecting various of said cam follower means for operating said cam follower means independently or in unison with one another.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 59 words
Apparatus according to claim 2 in which said intake valve means comprises a plurality of intake valves and said first cam follower means includes a respective cam follower operating each said intake valve and a separate cam follower selectively connectable with said cam followers whereby said intake valves can be selectively operated independently from one another or in unison.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 33 words
Apparatus according to claim 3 in which said exhaust valve means comprises a plurality of exhaust valves and said second cam follower means includes a respective cam follower operating each said exhaust valve.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 26 words
Apparatus according to claim 4 in which said second cam means includes a cam having a circular cam profile engaging one of said second cam followers.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 33 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the said camshaft means comprising a first camshaft which drives said first cam means and a second camshaft which drives said second cam means.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the said camshaft means comprises a single camshaft which drives both said first cam means and said second cam means.
