Abstract

Abstract A brake control apparatus is described that prevents a wheel lockup condition by identifying the brake pressure that produces the maximum possible braking effort during each brake pressure application period and applying a predetermined fraction of the identified pressure after an incipient wheel lockup condition is sensed. One criteria for sensing an incipient wheel lockup condition is the decrease in the braking effort from the maximum possible braking effort by a predetermined amount as wheel slip increases from a critical wheel slip value.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 128 words
A method of detecting an incipient wheel lockup condition of a braked wheel (11) of a vehicle traveling over a road surface, the method being characterised by the steps of: - determining (94) the value of tyre torque (T t ) tending to accelerate the wheel during braking; storing (98) the maximum calculated value of tyre torque (T tm ) determined each time the wheel is braked; determining (99) the value of slip between the wheel and the road surface; and indicating (100,101) an incipient wheel lockup condition when the determined value of tyre torque decreases below the stored maximum calculated value of tyre torque by a predetermined amount (T DEL ) during a predetermined condition of the value of slip between the wheel and the road surface.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the predetermined amount of decrease in tyre torque (T DEL ) is a predetermined percentage of the stored maximum calculated value of tyre torque (T tm ).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein the predetermined condition of the value of slip is the value of slip exceeding a predetermined amount.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein the predetermined condition of the value of slip is an increasing value.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 171 words
An anti-lock brake control apparatus for limiting the brake pressure (P b ) applied to the brakes (10) of a wheel (11) having a tendency to lock up as the slip between the wheel and a road surface increases beyond a critical wheel slip value, the apparatus being characterised by monitoring means (94) for monitoring the braking force tending to accelerate the wheel during the application of brake pressure (P b ); storing means (98) for storing the value of the maximum brake force monitored following each application of brake pressure and the brake pressure (P bm ) corresponding in time thereto; indicating means (99-101) for indicating an incipient wheel lockup condition when the monitored brake force decreases by a predetermined amount from the stored value of the maximum brake force monitored as the wheel slip increases from the critical wheel slip value; and reapplying means (120-128) for reapplying the brake pressure following a detected incipient wheel lockup condition to substantially the last stored value of brake pressure (P b m).
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 124 words
Apparatus as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the monitoring means comprises determining means (94) for determining the tyre torque (T t ) tending to accelerate the wheel (11) in accordance with the expression where ω̇ is the wheel angular acceleration, I w is the wheel moment of inertia and K b is a constant; the storing means (98) stores the value of the maximum calculated tyre torque (Tt m ) following each application of brake pressure and the indicating means (99-101) indicates an incipient wheel lockup condition when the estimated tyre torque (T t ) decreases from the stored maximum calculated tyre torque (T tm ) by an amount equal to T tm/KDEL as the wheel slip increases from the critical wheel slip value.
