Abstract

Abstract Shaped frictional elements, for example vehicle brake linings, disc pads and clutch facings, are made by a method which comprises mixing a frictional filler with from 5 to 30% of a liquid, alkaline, phenolformaldehyde resin having a formaldehyde: phenol molar ratio of from 1.1:1 to 3.5:1, a weight average molecular weight of from 300 to 4000 and a pH greater than 10, mixing a second portion of the same or different frictional filler with a liquid ester curing agent for the phenol-formaldehyde resin, intimately mixing the two portions together and allowing the resultant mixture to cure in a mould.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 95 words
Method for the manufacture of shaped frictional elements which comprises mixing frictional filler with from 5 to 3 0% of a liquid, alkaline, phenol- formaldehyde resin having a formaldehyde to phenol molecular ratio of between 1.1 : 1 and 3.5 : 1, a weight average molecular weight between 30 0 and 4000 and a pH greater than 10, mixing a second portion of the same or a different frictional filler with a liquid ester curing-agent for the phenol-formaldehyde resin, intimately mixing the two portions together and allowing the resultant mixture to cure in a mould.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 95 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
2 . A method as in Claim 1, where the frictional filler is asbestos, copper powder, iron wool, iron powder, barytes, or mixtures thereof.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 25 words
A method as in either of the Claims 1 or 2, where the resin has a molecular weight (Mw) within the range 600 to 1700.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 26 words
A method as in either of the Claims 1 or 2, where the resin has a formaldehyde to phenol ratio within the range 1:1 to 3.5:1.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 28 words
A method as in any of the Claims 1 to 4, where at least a substantial part of the alkali employed in the phenol-formaldehyde resin is potassium hydroxide.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 37 words
A method as in any of the Claims 1 to 5, where the liquid ester curing agent is an ester derived from a Cl - C10 fatty acid reacted with a C1-C10 alkyl mono or polyhydroxy alcohol.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 81 words
A composition suitable for the manufacture of brake linings, pads and clutch facings which comprises a major proportion of frictional filler or a mixture of frictional fillers, from 5 to 30% of a liquid, alkaline, phenol-formaldehyde resin with a formaldehyde to phenol molar ratio between 1:1 and 3.5:1, a weight average molecular weight of from 300 to 4000 and a pH value above 10 and from 10% to 110% on the weight of the resin of an ester as catalyst therefor.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 81 words
A composition suitable for the manufacture of brake linings, pads and clutch facings which comprises a major proportion of frictional filler or a mixture of frictional fillers, from 5 to 30% of a liquid, alkaline, phenol-formaldehyde resin with a formaldehyde to phenol molar ratio between 1:1 and 3.5:1, a weight average molecular weight of from 300 to 4000 and a pH value above 10 and from 10% to 110% on the weight of the resin of an ester as catalyst therefor.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 16 words
Shaped frictional article whenever produced by the process of any of the Claims 1 - 6.
