Abstract
Abstract The invention relates to a method of modifying a plant virus or its effects, which comprises incorporating genetic material into a plant and infecting said plant with a plant virus, whereby expression of the incorporated genetic material modifies the plant virus or its effects. In a preferred embodiment, expression in the plant of the incorporated genetic material causes attenuation of the symptoms of attack on the plant by a plant virus.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim
77 words
A method of protecting a plant against the effects of a plant virus, comprising transferring a DNA fragment into the genome of a plant, said DNA fragment being complementary to a symptom-attenuating satellite RNA sequence of a first plant virus and capable of being transcribed in said plant, whereby when transcribed but not necessarily translated therein the DNA fragment is capable of attenuating the symptoms brought about by infection of said plant with a second plant virus.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
27 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein the DNA fragment is transferred into the genome of said plant by means of a recombinant vector carrying said fragment.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
30 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein the DNA fragment is transferred into the genome of said plant by allowing the direct uptake of said fragment by the plant cells.
Claim 4
Independent Claim
22 words
A method according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the first and the second plant viruses are the same virus.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
22 words
A method according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the plant viruses are selected from Cucumoviruses, Nepoviruses, Tombusviruses and Sobemoviruses.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
16 words
A method according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the plant viruses are Cucumoviruses.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
14 words
A method according to claim 6, wherein the Cucumovirus is cucumber mosaic virus (CMV).
Claim 8
Independent Claim
30 words
A method according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the satellite RNA or the corresponding DNA fragment is modified prior to transfer into the genome of the plant.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
23 words
A method according to any of claims 1 to 8, wherein the DNA fragment is a cDNA fragment derived from said satellite RNA.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
19 words
A method according to any of claims 1 to 9, wherein the satellite RNA comprises a multimeric RNA structure.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
50 words
A method according to any of claims 2 and 4 to 10, wherein the recombinant vector is a plasmid comprising the T-DNA border sequences of the Ti plasmid of Agrobacterium tumefaciens ; a transcriptional promotor; a DNA fragment complementary to satellite RNA of a plant virus; and a transcriptional terminator.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
50 words
A method according to claim 11, wherein the transferring step is conducted by infecting cells of the plant with a strain of A. tumefaciens containing the recombinant vector; allowing the DNA fragment to be transferred to the genome of the cells; and regenerating whole plants from said infected, transformed cells.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
19 words
A plant which is protected by the method of any of claims 1 to 12, or the progeny thereof.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
36 words
A recombinant vector for use in protecting a plant by the method of any of claims 2 and 4 to 13, comprising a DNA fragment which is complementary to symptom-attenuating satellite RNA of a plant virus.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
29 words
A recombinant vector according to claim 14, wherein the satellite RNA or its complementary DNA fragment are modified prior to insertion in a recombinant vector in the transferring step.
Claim 16
Independent Claim
74 words
A method of modifying a plant virus or its effects, comprising transferring a DNA fragment into the genome of a plant, said DNA fragment being complementary to a symptom-attenuating satellite RNA sequence of a first plant virus and capable of being transcribed in said plant, whereby when transcribed but not necessarily translated therein the DNA fragment is capable of attenuating the symptoms brought about by infection of said plant with a second plant virus.
