Abstract

The shock wave source, in particular for a lithotripter, has a pressure source (1) for generating a pressure wave pulse (15), a focusing device (3) for focusing the pressure wave pulse (15) and a closing membrane (7) for coupling the pressure wave pulse (15) into the body of a patient, possibly with a coupling body (11). The closing membrane (7) and the focusing device (3) integrated in the pressure source (1) form a space (9) which serves as a leading section (5). It is filled with a liquid substance that has a high B / A ratio and an acoustic impedance that is less than / equal to that of water. The advantage of the arrangement is that the pressure wave pulse (15) is distributed very quickly in the run through the space (9). At a predetermined point in the path (5) of the pressure wave pulse (15), a specified minimum value of the quotient amplitude / rise time of the pressure wave pulse (15) can be achieved in spite of a reduced output amplitude at the pressure source (1) in the case of the material selection mentioned - compared to water. This results in a longer service life for the pressure source (1). The patient (13) is less exposed to acoustic energy. The efficiency of the lithotripter is increased.
