Abstract Novel liquid crystal compounds exhibiting an SC phase which, when added to an optically active liquid crystal, give a chiral smectic liquid crystal material of use in liquid crystal display elements utilizing the ferroelectricity of the material have the formula: wherein R¹ represents a C₇C₁₂ alkyl group and R² represents C₅-C₁₂ alkyl group.
