Abstract

Abstract An electrolysis apparatus for electrolysis of water comprises a series of cells (1), each cell (1) including a substantially open porous anode plate (2) and a substantially open porous cathode plate (4) with a solid electrolyte membrane (3) therebetween. First and second flow passages (6 and 12) extend through the cells (1), with the first flow passage (6) comprising bores (7, and 9) extending through the centers of the cathode plates (4), the anode plates (2), and the membranes (3), the bores (9) in the cathode plates-being fitted with annular sealing gaskets (11). The second flow passage (12) also comprises bores (13,14 and 15) extending through the cathode plates (4), the anode plates (2), and the membranes (3), with the bores (13) in the anode plates (2) being fitted with annular sealing gaskets (17). A seal (18) is provided at the outside perimeter of the cathode plate (4), to prevent the escape of fluid, containing hydrogen, therefrom. During operation, water is driven into the first flow passage (6). The water diffuses through the anode plate (2) from the central bore (8) and partial electrolysis occurs. Water which reaches an outer perimeter of the anode plate (2), without electrolysis, drains from the assembly, providing a means for cooling. Ions formed can migrate to the cathode plate (4), whereat hydrogen gas is formed, the products being evacuated from the apparatus.
