Abstract

Abstract In a sulphonated aromatic polymer contains repeating units (Ar-Y) (where Y is S0 2 and/or CO), at least half of groups Ar contain a group S0 3 M and M is 1/m of a polyvalent metal cation in at least 80% of such groups SO3 M. The polyvalent cation compound is formed by heating the corresponding sulphonic acid or monovalent cation compound with a salt of a polyvalent metal. The polymer is useful as a membrane and the polyvalent metal salt addition and/or the heat treatment may be applied to polymer in membrane form.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 84 words
A sulphonated polymer which contains repeating units where Y is -SO 2 - and/or -CO -; and Ar is a divalent aromatic radical, which may differ from unit to unit in the polymer chain; characterised in that at least 50X molar of groups Ar contain at least one group - S0 3 M; and in that M is 1 of a polyvalent metal m cation in at least 80X molar of the groups S0 3 M where m is the valency of the cation.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 84 words
A sulphonated polymer which contains repeating units where Y is -SO 2 - and/or -CO -; and Ar is a divalent aromatic radical, which may differ from unit to unit in the polymer chain; characterised in that at least 50X molar of groups Ar contain at least one group - S0 3 M; and in that M is 1 of a polyvalent metal m cation in at least 80X molar of the groups S0 3 M where m is the valency of the cation.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 43 words
A polymer as claimed in claim 1 which is essentially insoluble in water, but to which the corresponding monovalent cation polymer is soluble in water or is swollen to the extent of 50% by weight in water at ambient temperature in 24 hours.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 36 words
A polymer as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 in which sulphonated aromatic groups linked by oxygen or sulphur or a divalent substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic group or a residue of a diol are present.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 69 words
A polymer as claimed in any one of claims I to 3 which contains repeating units -Ph 3- and -Ph 2 Y Ph 2 - linked through ether linkages with 0 to 30% molar of the repeating units - Ph 2 Y Ph 2 , where Ph 2 is phenylene Ph 3 is phenylene having 1 or 2 groups - S0 3 M; and Y is -SO 2 -
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 64 words
A process for producing a sulphonated polymer according to any one of claims 1 to 4 which comprises reacting the corresponding sulphonated polymer in which the cations are hydrogen and/or monovalent metal or onium at at least 50°C in the presence of polyvalent cations in a sufficient quantity and for a sufficient time to form a material less soluble preferably essentially insoluble in water.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 56 words
A process as claimed in claim 5 in which the sulphonated polymer is in solution in water, aqueous acetone or aqueous methanol or is a pre-formed layer, in which latter event the heat treatment is optionally applied after forming the layer from a solution or dispersion of a mixture of the polymer with the polyvalent cations.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 36 words
A composite membrane comprising a layer of a sulphonated polymer according to any one of claims 1 to 4 on a porous support formed from an unsulphonated polyarylsulphone containing the residue of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane or of hydroquinone.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 29 words
A membrane formed from a polymer according to any one of claims 1 to 4 or produced by a process according to any one of claims 5 to 6.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 20 words
A reverse osmosis or ultrafiltration apparatus in which the membrane is a membrane according to claim 7 or claim 8.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 41 words
A process for the desalination of sea water, or for the purification of brackish water and industrial effluents, by effecting reverse osmosis or ultrafiltration using a membrane according to claim 7 or claim 8 or an apparatus according to claim 9.-
