Satellite communication system using quasi-stationary orbits
Abstract
In a telecommunications satellite system on quasi-stationary orbits with several earth satellites with an elliptical orbit appearing in cyclical succession at almost the same sky point and replacing each other in radio operation, a different distance of the satellites to be switched on and off to earth radio stations should be guaranteed, which provides an additional runtime for storage at the switchover time enables. For this purpose, the apogee of the orbital ellipse is shifted so far from the northernmost or southernmost orbital point against the direction of flight of the respective satellite that there is sufficient signal repetition of the bits to be transmitted at the time of switching. In a special system with three satellites on elliptical orbits with an eccentricity of 0.713 and orbital periods of 12 hours, a shift in the apogee from the northernmost orbital point by 0.2 ° to the direction of the satellite flight results in a guaranteed radial difference in distance between the mutually replacing satellites and the earth stations of 75 km. The extension of the propagation time that can be achieved in this way corresponds to a repetition of 1024 bits at 2.048 Mbit / s (FIG. 1).
