Abstract

Abstract The present invention provides a message transmission network having a plurality of terminals for coupling to different data processing systems or devices that are to intercommunicate in arbitrary combinations. The network comprises a plurality of signal transmission means extending between the terminals, each said transmission means comprising a plurality of bidirectional message switching nodes - (54) serially intercoupled by transmission links. The message switching nodes are intercoupled in a converging configuration from the terminals, meeting at a common recirculation node (54a), and include means for returning the message from any terminal via the common recirculation node to all the terminals in the diverging direction.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 99 words
A message transmission network having a plurality of terminals for coupling to different data processing systems or devices that are to intercommunicate in arbitrary combinations characterised by: a plurality of signal transmission means extending between the terminals, each said transmission means comprising a plurality of bidirectional message switching nodes (54) serially intercoupled by transmission links, wherein the message switching nodes are intercoupled in a converging configuration from the terminals, meeting at a common recirculation node (54a), and include means for returning the message from any terminal via the common recirculation node to all the terminals in the diverging direction.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 99 words
A message transmission network having a plurality of terminals for coupling to different data processing systems or devices that are to intercommunicate in arbitrary combinations characterised by: a plurality of signal transmission means extending between the terminals, each said transmission means comprising a plurality of bidirectional message switching nodes (54) serially intercoupled by transmission links, wherein the message switching nodes are intercoupled in a converging configuration from the terminals, meeting at a common recirculation node (54a), and include means for returning the message from any terminal via the common recirculation node to all the terminals in the diverging direction.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
A message transmission network as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the message switching nodes each include means (70,72) for determining priority between colliding messages, and means (60) for transmitting only the message having priority.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 49 words
A message transmission network as claimed in claim 2, characterised in that the message switching nodes further comprise active logic means (72, 74, 60) responsive to the messages being transmitted for merging messages in the converging direction in accordance with a predetermined priority as the successful messages are transferred.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 41 words
A message transmission network as claimed in claim 3, characterised in that the messages are serial sequences and the active logic means comprise means (86) for synchronously advancing the serial sequences in successive time frames along the nodes of the network.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
A message transmission network as claimed in claim 4, characterised in that the active logic means are arranged in successive tiers, whereby the network is expandable by lateral extension and addition of tiers.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 40 words
A message transmission network as claimed in claim 5, characterised in that the message switching nodes each include a port at the converging side and two ports at the diverging side and the nodes are arranged in a binary tree.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 43 words
A message transmission network as claimed in claim 6, characterised- in that the message switching nodes each comprise a multiple bidirectional set of data lines and unidirectional control lines for indicating the results of collisions to the terminals from which messages were transmitted.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 31 words
A message transmission network as claimed in claim 7, characterised in that the messages are variable length serial sequences and the transmission links are of no more than a predetermined length.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 28 words
A message transmission network as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the network comprises dual pluralities of message switching nodes and interconnections coupled redundantly to the terminals.
