Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to an end cap for a ceramic spool as well as to a method of and device for mounting it on the end of such a spool. The quill portion (5) of an end cap is divided by means of slits (9) into strips (10), the first ends of which are rigidly connected to a ring (12) formed by the open quill end and the other ends are rigidly connected to a flange (13) closing the other quill end, with a stub axle (6) projecting from said flange. Provided in the middle of strips (10) are threaded holes (11). The annular jacket (7) of said auxiliary device (3) can be fitted around said end cap quill (5) with a small annular clearance remaining therebetween. The annular jacket (7) is circumferentially provided with holes (17) with screws (18) extending therethrough and engageable in threaded holes (11). By turning screws (18), said strips (10) can be bent outwards so as to fit the spool end (4) inside quill (5). When screws (18) are unscrewed, strips (10) return elastically inwards and squeeze around the spool end (4).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 89 words
An end cap (2) for a ceramic spool (1), comprising a metal quill (5) which defines a space (14) open at one end thereof, the spool end 4 being insertable and fastenable into said space, characterized in that the wall of quill (5) is divided by means of slits (9) into strips (10), that the open end of quill (5) comprises a continuous ring portion (12) to which the ends of strips (10) are rigidly connected, and that strips (10) are provided with gripping means (11) for external engagement.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 89 words
An end cap (2) for a ceramic spool (1), comprising a metal quill (5) which defines a space (14) open at one end thereof, the spool end 4 being insertable and fastenable into said space, characterized in that the wall of quill (5) is divided by means of slits (9) into strips (10), that the open end of quill (5) comprises a continuous ring portion (12) to which the ends of strips (10) are rigidly connected, and that strips (10) are provided with gripping means (11) for external engagement.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 34 words
An end cap as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that in the area of strips (10) there is a zone (21) whereat the internal diameter of quill (5) is at its smallest.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 44 words
An end cap as set forth in claim 2, characterized in that the internal diameter of quill (5) decreases from the ends towards the center, said point (21) of minimum diameter being aligned - seen in axial direction - with said gripping means (11).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 43 words
An end cap as set forth in claim 2 or 3, characterized in that said point (21) of minimum diameter has a certain, short axial extent or a plurality of such minimum points are spaced from each other by a short axial distance.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 45 words
An end cap as set forth in any of claims 1 - 4, characterized in that in the end zones of quill (5) the internal quill surface is provided with axially short cylindrical surfaces (20, 22), whereat the internal quill diameter is at its maximum.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 34 words
En end cap as set forth in claim 3, characterized in that the external surface of quill (5) is provided with an annular rib (19) including threaded holes (11) which serve as gripping means.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 105 words
A method of manufacturing an end cap as set forth in any of the preceding claims and mounting it on the end of a ceramic spool, characterized in that said strips (10) are bent by pulling radially outwards at said strip-gripping means (11) for increasing the internal diameter of quill (5) at least over a part of the axial quill length followed by pushing the end (4) of a ceramic spool inside said quill (5) and releasing the pulling force that is bending said strips (10) whereby the strips (10), as a result of elastic deformation, bend back and squeeze around the spool end (4).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 92 words
An auxiliary device for carrying out the method set out in claim 7, characterized in that said auxiliary device (3) comprises an annular jacket (7) that can be fitted around the quill portion (5) of an end cap (2) and is provided with circumferential gripping and pulling means (17, 18) engageable with said strip-gripping means (11), and that the internal diameter of annular jacket (7) at gripping and pulling means (17, 18) is dimensioned to exceed by a samll clearance the external diameter of end cap quill (5) at gripping means (11).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 58 words
An auxiliary device as set forth in claim 8, characterized in that said diameter clearance equals to one half of the distance said strips (10) must be bent in order to expand the internal diameter minimum point (21) of quill (5) to be substantially equal to the internal diameter of the end zones (20, 22) of quill (5).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 56 words
An auxiliary device as set forth in claim 8 or 9, characterized in that said gripping and pulling means comprise screws (18) fitted in unthreaded holes (17), spaced circumferentially around said annular jacket (7), the spacing of said holes matching that of threaded holes (11) formed in the strips (10) of said end cap quill (5).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 53 words
An auxiliary device as set forth in claim 8, characterized in that one end of said auxiliary device (3) is sealed with an annular flange (24) from which extends a quill (8) for inserting therein a stub axle (6) which projects from a flange (13) closing the other end of end cap (2).
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 53 words
An end cap as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that the other ends of strips (10) are rigidly connected either directly or by way of an annular portion in quill (5) to a flange (12) closing the other end of quill (5), with a stub axle (6) extending from said flange.
