Abstract

Abstract An aerial optical fibre cable comprises a glass-fibre-reinforced plastics core member (1) having a slot (2) with a zero lay angle accommodating loose-tubed optical fibres (3, 3A) and sheathed with a longitudinal tape (13) bound with a binder 915) and over-sheathed with a plastics extrusion (14).The cable is self-supporting and completely non-metallic and is suitable for telecommunications and data transmission services alongside overhead power transmission systems. An alternative embodiment (Figure 2) is not self-supporting but is similar in design and adapted for support from a support wire, and another embodiment has a rectangular slot housing one or more ribbon elements. The cable is simple and cheap to make.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 65 words
An optical fibre cable comprising an elongate core member defining a surfacial longitudinally-extending slot, at least one optical fibre located in said slot, and means closing the slot, characterised in that the core member forms the main crush-resistant armouring around the optical fibre and the main tensile strength member of the cable, and in that there is an excess length of fibre in the slot.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 65 words
An optical fibre cable comprising an elongate core member defining a surfacial longitudinally-extending slot, at least one optical fibre located in said slot, and means closing the slot, characterised in that the core member forms the main crush-resistant armouring around the optical fibre and the main tensile strength member of the cable, and in that there is an excess length of fibre in the slot.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
A cable as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the core member is made of a pultruded glass- reinforced-plastics material.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 50 words
A cable as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, characterised by comprising a tubular member (3A) within the slot (2) and containing the fibre(s) (3), there being an excess length of fibres (3) within the tubular member (3A) and an excess length of tubular member (3A) within the cable.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
A cable as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that said slot (17) contain loose optical fibre (3).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
An optical fibre cable as claimed in claim 1 or 2 characterised in that the slot houses a ribbon element containing optical fibres side-by-side.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 24 words
A cable as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the excess length of element within the cable lies in the range 0.2 to 0.8%.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
A cable as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that the diameter of the core member is approximately 10mm.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 20 words
A cable as claimed in any preceding claim characterised in that there is only one slot in the core member.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 67 words
A method of making a fibre optic cable comprising providing an elongate core member defining at least one longitudinally-extending surfacial slot, feeding at least one optical fibre into the slot, and applying means to close the slot, characterised in that the core member is made of a non-metallic material having a high elastic modulus, and in that an excess length of fibre is created within the slot.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 67 words
A method of making a fibre optic cable comprising providing an elongate core member defining at least one longitudinally-extending surfacial slot, feeding at least one optical fibre into the slot, and applying means to close the slot, characterised in that the core member is made of a non-metallic material having a high elastic modulus, and in that an excess length of fibre is created within the slot.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 32 words
A method of making a cable as claimed in claim 9 characterised in that the core member is bent around a capstan to provide the excess fibre in the cable when straightened.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 82 words
A method of making an optical fibre cable comprising providing a strength member core having a longitudinal slot in its surface and providing a ribbon-like element containing a plurality of optical fibres held in side-by-side relationship in the ribbon element, characterised by feeding the ribbon element into the slot in the core such that there is an excess of element in the slot in the finished cable, and by encasing the core in a sheath to retain the element within the slot.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 82 words
A method of making an optical fibre cable comprising providing a strength member core having a longitudinal slot in its surface and providing a ribbon-like element containing a plurality of optical fibres held in side-by-side relationship in the ribbon element, characterised by feeding the ribbon element into the slot in the core such that there is an excess of element in the slot in the finished cable, and by encasing the core in a sheath to retain the element within the slot.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 60 words
A method as claimed in claim 11, characterised in that after the element has been introduced into the slot in the core, a binder is applied to the core to retain the element in the slot, and the core is bent around the capstan such that over-feeding of the element in to the core is induced to produce said excess.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 32 words
A method as claimed in claim 12 characterised in that the slot is filled with a viscous water blocking material at a position in which the cable core contains the excess element.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method as claimed in claim 13 characterised in that the bound core is encased in a tape and the taped core is subsequently encased in an extruded plastics material.
