Abstract

Abstract Oil is supplied from an oil pump (30) as working oil to hydraulic lash adjusters (17a, 17b) and also as lubricating oil to journals and cams of a camshaft (12). The oil passage system includes a first supply passage (31a) connected to the oil pump, a second supply passage (31 b) connected between the first supply passage and a first distribution passage (32a) coupled to a group of hydraulic lash adjusters (1 7b), a joint passage (33) connected to the first distribution passage, and a second distribution passage (32b) coupled to the joint passage and connected to another group of hydraulic lash adjusters (17a). The second distribution passage is connected by air vent passages (35b, 35c) to a lubricating oil passage (34) which supplies the camshaft with the lubricating oil. The joint passage is connected to one of the camshaft journals by a relief passage (36) having a relief valve (37).

Claim 1
Independent Claim 95 words
A system for supplying oil to a camshaft (12) and hydraulic lash adjusters (17a, 17b) of a valve operating mechanism (9) in an internal combustion engine (E), said system comprising: a supply passage (31a, 31b) for supplying oil under pressure; a distribution passage (32a, 32b, 33) connected to said supply passage for distributing oil from said supply passage as working oil to the hydraulic lash adjusters; and a lubricating oil passage (34) connected to said distribution passage for supplying oil from said distribution passage as lubricating oil to lubricate journals and cams of said camshaft.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Independent Claim 43 words
A system according to claim-1, further including a relief passage (36) communicating between said distribution passage (33) and one of said journals and having a relief valve (37) openable when the pressure of oil in said distribution passage rises beyond a predetermined level.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
A system according to claim 2, wherein said relief passage (36) is defined in a cylinder head (2) of said engine, said relief valve (37) being detachably mounted in said cylinder head.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 37 words
A system according to any of claims 1 to 3, further including an oil check passage system (38) connected to said distribution passage for preventing oil from flowing from said distribution passage back to said supply passage.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 50 words
A system according to claim 4, wherein said lubricating oil passage (34) has a plurality of oil outlet holes (29) opening toward said cams (12i, 12e) of said camshaft, and further including an air vent passage (35h) interconnected between said oil check passage system (38) and said lubricating oil passage.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 53 words
A system according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein said lubricating oil passage (34) has a plurality of oil outlet holes (29) opening toward said cams (12i, 12e) of said camshaft, further including at least one air vent passage (35b, 35c) interconnected between said distribution passage and said lubricating oil passage.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
A system according to claim 5 or 6, wherein the or each said air vent passage has an orifice.
