Abstract
Abstract In order to form micropores in a magnetic coating for the retention of a liquid lubricant, water and an inverse micelle forming surfactant are added in an appropriate molar ratio to the organic binder for the magnetic particles. Micropores of uniform size and distribution are formed in the coating when the water evaporates during curing of the coating. The size and number of the micropores is controlled by the water/surfactant molar ratio, the amount of water and the amount of surfactant. This permits the design and control of the amount of liquid lubricant retained in the magnetic coating.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim
110 words
A method of making a magnetic record disk which includes the steps of preparing an organic-based binder which includes a solvent and has magnetic particles dispersed therein, coating the binder onto a suitable substrate, orienting the magnetic particles in alignment with a magnetic field, curing the coating and applying a lubricant to the cured coating, the method being characterised by adding in a predetermined molar ratio water and an inverse micelle forming surfactant to the binder before it is coated onto the substrate whereby during curing of the binder the water evaporated from the attached inverse micelle forming surfactant forms miropores in the cured coating for retention of the lubricant.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
16 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, in which the surfactant comprises Aerosol-OT (sodium di-isooctyl sulfosuccinate).
