Abstract
Abstract A locking collar (45) is provided to prevent axial movement of a syringe plunger (39) relative to its barrel (29). The collar (45) fits on the mouth of the barrel and is fixed against relative axial movement and rotation. Cam means (61) on the inner periphery of the collar (45) are releasably engageable with the plunger (39) by relative rotation of plunger and barrel. A two part collar (127) and a method of attaching such a collar are also disclosed.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 26
Claim 1
Independent Claim
69 words
A device for locking a syringe plunger (37) and barrel (29) against relative axial movement and comprising a collar (45) for the mouth of a syringe barrel (29), said collar (45) having attachment means for preventing relative axial movement and relative rotation of said barrel (29) and having cam means on the inner periphery thereof adapted, in use, to releasably engage said plunger (37) to prevent relative axial movement.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
69 words
A device for locking a syringe plunger (37) and barrel (29) against relative axial movement and comprising a collar (45) for the mouth of a syringe barrel (29), said collar (45) having attachment means for preventing relative axial movement and relative rotation of said barrel (29) and having cam means on the inner periphery thereof adapted, in use, to releasably engage said plunger (37) to prevent relative axial movement.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
23 words
A device according to Claim 1, wherein said cam means is operative in use to engage said plunger (37) on relative rotation thereof.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
22 words
A device according to Claim 2, wherein said cam means further includes stop means to limit relative rotation of said plunger (37).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
33 words
A device according to Claim 2 or Claim 3, wherein said collar (45) has a generally circular aperture and said cam means comprise an inwardly directed flange (61) extending chordally across said aperture.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
22 words
A device according to Claim 4, wherein said stop means comprises an abutment (75) on the chordal edge of said flange (61).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
21 words
A device according to Claim 5, wherein the chordal edge thickness of said flange (61) is thinner than said collar (45).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
19 words
A device according to Claim 6, wherein the thickness of said flange (61) increases gradually from said chordal edge.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
21 words
A device according to Claim 6 or Claim 7, wherein said stop means is of greater thickness than said chordal edge.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
20 words
A device according to any one of Claims 5 to 8, wherein said collar 45 has two opposed flanges (61).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
18 words
A device according to Claim 9, wherein the respective chordal edges of said flanges (61) are substantially parallel.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
17 words
A device according to Claim 9 or Claim 10, wherein stop means are provided on each flange.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
30 words
A device according to Claim 11, wherein said stop means are diametrically opposed and on either side of a diametrical line perpendicular to the chordal edges of said flanges (61).
Claim 14
Independent Claim
26 words
A device according to any preceding claim, wherein said attachment means comprise hooks (69) for engagement, in use, with the finger support of said barrel (29).
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
35 words
A device according to Claim 13, wherein two opposed hooks (69) are provided, each hook comprising a projection extending axially of said collar and having a radially inwardly directed member (71) at the end thereof.
Claim 16
Independent Claim
16 words
A device according to any preceding claim, wherein the collar is a single piece plastics moulding.
Claim 17
Independent Claim
13 words
A device according to any preceding claim, wherein said collar comprises interlocking parts.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim
15 words
A device according to Claim 16, wherein two parts are provided each having cam means.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim
13 words
A device according to Claim 16 or 17, wherein said parts are identical.
Claim 20
Dependent Claim
24 words
A device according to Claim 17 or 18, wherein each of said parts has a respective projection (139) and recess (141) for interlocking engagement.
Claim 21
Dependent Claim
33 words
A syringe comprising a barrel having a finger support at the mouth thereof, a plunger slidable in said barrel and a locking device according to any preceding claim, mounted on said finger support.
Claim 22
Dependent Claim
34 words
A syringe according to Claim 20, wherein said plunger has ribs extending radially from the longitudinal axis thereof, the ribs being engageable with said cam means on relative rotation of said plunger and barrel.
Claim 23
Dependent Claim
14 words
A syringe according to Claim 21, wherein four ribs are provided in cruciform section.
Claim 24
Dependent Claim
71 words
A syringe according to any one of Claims 20 to 22, wherein the cam means is of a first material and said plunger is of a second material, one of said materials being harder than the other of said materials whereby engagement of the cam means and plunger in use causes the harder of said materials to deform the softer of said materials to lock the plunger against relative axial movement.
Claim 25
Dependent Claim
14 words
A syringe according to Claim 23, wherein the cam means is the harder material.
Claim 26
Independent Claim
68 words
A method of assembling a locking device as claimed in any one of Claims 16 to 19 to a syringe and comprising the steps of: inserting a plunger into a syringe barrel; positioning the parts of the locking device around the finger support of said barrel; and urging the parts toward one another such that the parts interlock to form a collar for the mouth of said barrel.
