Abstract

Abstract A technique is disclosed for providing automatic modification of a computer application program to adapt the program for compatibility with hardware different from that for which the program was originally written and tested. Upon initial loading of the application program, a search is made to determine the existence of a set of exception tables, external to the application program. If the exception tables are present, all code conversion tables within the application program relating to I/O operations are modified according to the set of exception tables. Plural sets of exception tables may be included with the ability of the operator to choose which set of exception tables will be used to modify the program, thereby allowing the operator to use a single program with a variety of different hardware configurations, assuring with each configuration that the intended characters and symbols are displayed and printed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 102 words
A method for modifying a computer program to properly interface with I/O devices configured differently from the I/O devices for which said program was written, comprising: modifying said program to serach for the presence of a set of exception tables external to said program during loading of said program into a computer; configuring said set of exception tables to alter a set of code conversion tables within said program to redefine the meaning of selected codes within said program; modifying said set of conversion tables according to values stored in said exception tables upon detection of the presence of said exception tables.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 102 words
A method for modifying a computer program to properly interface with I/O devices configured differently from the I/O devices for which said program was written, comprising: modifying said program to serach for the presence of a set of exception tables external to said program during loading of said program into a computer; configuring said set of exception tables to alter a set of code conversion tables within said program to redefine the meaning of selected codes within said program; modifying said set of conversion tables according to values stored in said exception tables upon detection of the presence of said exception tables.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 55 words
The method of Claim 1 wherein said step of configuring said set of exception tables further comprises building said exception tables with only exceptions to said set of conversion tables, whereby data in said conversion tables not to be modified by said data in said exception tables has no associated data in said exception table.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 34 words
The method of Claim 2 wherein said step of configuring said set of exception tables further comprises building said exception tables with values to be logically combined with preselected data in said conversion tables.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 33 words
The method of Claim 2 wherein said step of configuring said set of exception tables further comprises building said exception tables with values to be substituted for preselected data in said conversion tables.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 56 words
The method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said conversion tables are utilized within said program for translating data codes from one format to another format, each of said exception tables being associated with a particular one of said conversion tables and each containing data to modify the contents of said conversion tables.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 50 words
The method of Claim 5 wherein said step of configuring said set of exception tables further comprises : building multiple pluralities of said exception tables; and providing operator selection of one of said multiple pluralities of said exception tables to be utilized for modifying said plurality of said conversion tables.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method of Claim 5 or 6 wherein one of said sets of code conversion tables within said program is utilized to convert ASCII code to MLG EBCDIC code.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
The method of Claim 7 wherein one of said sets of code conversion tables within said program is utilized to convert MLG EBCDIC code to ASCII code.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
The method of Claim 8 wherein one of said sets of code conversion tables within said program is utilized to convert icon formatting information to ASCII code.
