Abstract
Abstract There are disclosed gels composed of hydrated phyllosilicates combined with a lattice expanding agent selected from the group consisting of a primary aminocarboxy acid, lysine orotate, and glycylglycine. Both organic and inorganic additions, as well as ion exchange products, are disclosed. The gels, with or without the additions, may be polymerized and may be formed or shaped. Also disclosed are methods for generating the gels and for treating the gels generated.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim
53 words
A gel consisting essentially of at least one delaminated hydrated or hydratable natural or synthetic phyllosilicate combined with a lattice expanding agent selected from the group consisting of a primary aminocarboxy acid lysine orotate, and glycylglycine, at least a portion of said lattice expanding agent being intercalated in the lattice of said phyllosilicate.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
20 words
A gel in accordance with claim 1 wherein the phyllosilicate is vermiculite, sepiolite, and sodium montmorillonite, hectorite, or the like.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
44 words
A gel in accordance with claim 1 wherein the expanding agent is a primary aminocarboxy acid having an alkyl grouping of 1-12 methylene groups, a beta-alanine, or a mixture of primary aminocarboxy acids, or a mixture of primary aminocarboxy acids containing secondary amino acids.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
14 words
A gel in accordance with claim 1 which additionally contains a quaternary ammonium silane.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
41 words
A gel in accordance with claim 1 wherein the gel contains an organic or inorganic additive of an ionic nature which at least partially enters the phyllosilicate interlayer, preferably capable of polymerization, such as polyethylene terephthalate, or a compound of silver.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
21 words
A gel in accordance with claim 1 wherein said lattice expanding agent is present in a solution of a polar liquid.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
28 words
an article of manufacture composed of the gel any one of claims 1-6, in dried and polymerized form, in a molded body, or in form of a film.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
38 words
A method of producing the gel of any one of claims 1-6, which comprises contacting said phyllosilicate with lattice expanding agent to expand the lattice of said phyllosilicate and then separating the expanded phyllosilicate at the interlayer thereof.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
39 words
A method of producing a gel in accordance with claim 8 wherein a delaminating force, preferably a shearing force of high or low energy is applied to the expanded phyllosilicate to separate the expanded phyllosilicate at the interlayer thereof.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
29 words
A method of producing a gel in accordance with claim 8 or 9 wherein particles larger than a predetermined size are removed to provide a gel of improved consistency.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
29 words
A method of producing a gel in accordance with claim 8, 9 or 10 wherein a substantial portion of the expanding agent is separated from the gel for recovery.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
77 words
A method of producing a gel in accordance with claim 11 wherein the solids' content in the remaining gel is diluted to a value of about 25% and the resulting material formed to a desired shape by compression molding, injection molding, or extrusion, or is diluted to a viscosity suitable for spray drying and the diluted material is spray dried, or is diluted to a viscosity suitable for hot calendering or tape casting to form continuous sheet.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
32 words
A method of producing a gel according to claim 12 wherein the material is formed to desired shape and the formed body heated to remove solvents and facilitate polymerization and cross linking.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
19 words
A method according to claim 13 wherein the material is heated to a temperature in the range of 100-800°C.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim
29 words
A method of producing a gel in accordance with claim 8 wherein pH of the primary aminocarboxy acid solution is adjusted to the isoelectric point before adding the phyllosilicate.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim
20 words
A method of producing a gel according to claim 8 wherein the gel is dispersed in water to form floc.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim
40 words
A method of producing a gel according to claim 8 wherein the gel is brought into contact with an alkali, alkaline earth, or transition metal chloride, acetate, nitrate, phosphate or hydroxide solution to break the gel and form ion"exchanged floc.
