Abstract

Abstract A clip for ligating vascular tissue and applier for the same. The clip comprises a pair of leg members joined at their proximal ends by a resilient hinge. The distal end of one of the leg members has an interlocking penetrating point which locks with the distal end of the other leg member. The penetrating point is completely shrouded by the distal end of the leg member with which it locks.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 216 words
A ligating clip for ligating vascular tissue, said clip comprising a first leg member and a second leg member, said leg members connected at their proximal ends by a resilient hinge, each of said leg members having a tissue clamping surface disposed in opposing relationship to the tissue clamping surface of the other leg member, said tissue clamping surfaces being approximately parallel when said clip is in a closed position, each of said tissue clamping surfaces having a length of approximately 2 centimeters, each of said leg members having longitudinally disposed reinforcing means, said first leg member terminating at its distal end in a tissue penetrating means, said means extending in a direction towards the distal end of the second leg member, the distal end of said first leg member having a first locking means, the second leg member terminating at its distal end in a second locking means for interlocking with said first locking means when said clip is in a closed position, and said second leg member including means disposed at its distal end for shrouding the tissue penetrating means of said first leg member when the clip is in the closed position and providing a transverse interlock to prevent lateral movement between the leg members when the clip is in the closed position.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 216 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
A clip according to Claim 1 wherein the tissue penetrating means comprises a sharp point extending from said first leg member towards said second leg member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 70 words
A clip according to Claim 2 wherein the locking means of said first leg member compri_ses an undercut ledge at the base of said sharp point and the locking means on said second leg member comprises a shoulder disposed at the distal end of said leg member which interengages with the undercut ledge on the sharp point to interlock the leg members when the clip is in the closed position.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
A clip according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 wherein the resilient hinge comprises a thinned area joining the first and second leg members.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 79 words
A clip according to any one of Claims 1 to 4 wherein the tissue clamping surface of the first leg member has a longitudinal ridge disposed in the center of said tissue clamping surface and the tissue clamping surface of the second leg member has a pair of spaced apart longitudinally extending ridges disposed thereon so that when the clip is closed the ridge on the first leg member is disposed between the ridges on the second leg member.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 64 words
6 . A clip according to any one of Claims 1 to 5 wherein the tissue clamping surface of the first leg member has a centrally located sharpened point extending from said surface, the tissue clamping surface of the second leg member has a recess disposed in the clamping surface in which the point is disposed when the clip is in the closed position.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 42 words
A clip according to any one of Claims 1 to 6 wherein the longitudinally disposed reinforcing means comprises a longitudinally disposed ridge on the back surface of each leg member, said longitudinally extending ridge being narrower than the body of the leg.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 45 words
A clip according to any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the outer surface of the distal end of both leg members has an opening disposed in said outer surface for accepting means on a suitable instrument for holding the clip in said instrument.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 88 words
An instrument, for applying a ligating clip according to any one of claims 1 to 8, said instrument comprising a pair of handles pivoted about a hinge point, said handles crossing at said hinge point and extending beyond the hinge point to form a pair of clip closing jaws having opposed interfaces, each of said inner faces having a pair of longitudinally spaced apart pins extending towards the other jaw for engaging with suitable recesses in the distal end of the clip to be applied by the instrument.
