Abstract

Abstract An adaptive equalizer 200 is disclosed which includes a plurality of multiply-accumulate devices 201, 202, 203 and a rotating coefficient register 212. Each multiply-accumulate device multiplies each input signal sample by an associated coefficient in an ensemble, stores the result and periodically outputs the accumulated results as the equalized input signal. The rotating coefficient register successively associates each coefficient in the ensemble with a different multiply-accumulate device. Coefficient update circuitry 213, 230, 214, 216, 21 is also provided which periodically updates the coefficients in the ensemble so as to optimize equalizer performance.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 104 words
An adaptive equalizer CHARACTERISED BY a plurality of multipliers (206) for multiplying each of a succession of input signal samples by an associated coefficient in an ensemble, a plurality of summers (207,208,209), each associated with a different one of said mulitpliers, for providing an equalized output signal in response to products formed by the associated Multiplier, means (212) for successively associating each of the coefficients in the ensemble with a different one of said plurality of multipliers to form the products of said samples and coefficients, and means (215) for revising each coefficient in said ensemble as a function of said equalized output signal.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 104 words
An adaptive equalizer CHARACTERISED BY a plurality of multipliers (206) for multiplying each of a succession of input signal samples by an associated coefficient in an ensemble, a plurality of summers (207,208,209), each associated with a different one of said mulitpliers, for providing an equalized output signal in response to products formed by the associated Multiplier, means (212) for successively associating each of the coefficients in the ensemble with a different one of said plurality of multipliers to form the products of said samples and coefficients, and means (215) for revising each coefficient in said ensemble as a function of said equalized output signal.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
An equalizer as claimed in claim 1 wherein said revising means (215) also revises said coefficients as a function of said input signal samples.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
An equalizer as claimed in claim 1 wherein said revising means (215) revises said coefficients at selected times.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
An equalizer as claimed in claim 1 wherein said associating means (212) includes a plurality of delay elements serially connected in a loop.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 31 words
An equalizer as claimed in claim 1 wherein said associating means (212) replaces said coefficients with substitute coefficients when said equalized output signal has a value greater than a preselected threshold.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 31 words
An equalizer as claimed in claim 1 wherein said revising means (215) revises each of said coefficients by multiplying a different subset of data in a common set of stored data.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
An equalizer as claimed in claim 6 wherein said common set of data is updated in response to said equalizer output signal at selected times.
Claim 9
