Abstract A copper phthalocyanine compound of the formula: wherein CuPc is a copper phthalocyanine nucleus, R, is an alkyl group, an aralkyl group or an aryl group each having 3 to 18 carbon atoms, R 2 and R 3 are, the same or different, each a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyethyl group, X is an alkali metal, a hydrogen atom or an ammonium group, a is 1 or 2, b is 0, 1 or 2 and c is 1, 2 or 3 provided that a, b and c satisfy following equation: which is useful as a cyanic dyestuff for an aqueous ink composition, particularly for ink jet recording.
