Abstract

Abstract A splice case is formed from a flexible permeable sheet that may be wrapped around a splice substantially totally to enclose it. The sheet may have folded over edges such that its edge portions have a V-shape in cross-section, which allows the case to retain pressure. The sheet is surrounded by a casing.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 24
Claim 1
Independent Claim 114 words
An assembly suitable for environmentally protecting a cable splice, which comprises: a flexible impermeable sheet that can be wrapped around the splice substantially totally to enclose the splice; a sealing material that together with the sheet can form an environmental seal around the splice ; and a casing that may be positioned around the wrapped splice; the sheet having an edge portion that is substantially V-shaped in cross-section, the arms of the V being able to open out in response to a pressure difference between the outside and inside of the wrapped sheet such that a seal formed by the sealing material to the sheet is not put into peel by the pressure difference.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 114 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 38 words
An assembly according to claim 1 in which the apex of the V faces outwardly of the splice so that the arms of the V are able to open out under an excess pressure within the wrapped sheet.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 50 words
An assembly according to claim 2, in which the sheet has a portion which an apex of a V faces into and an apex of a V faces out of the assembly and which can open out under the influence of excess pressure inside and excess pressure outside the assembly.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 61 words
An assembly according to any preceding claim, in which the casing is substantially cylindrical, and which additionally comprises end supports at respective end portions of the casing, the sheet extending from one end support to the other such that the sheet forms a pressure retaining enclosure from the periphery of one end support to the periphery of the other end support.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 16 words
An assembly according to any preceding claim in which the sealing material comprises a hot-melt adhesive.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
An assembly according to any preceding claim, in which the sealing material comprises a gel.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 28 words
An assembly according to claim 6, in which the gel has a cone penetration value of 150-350 (10- i mm) and an ultimate elongation of at least 200%.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
An assembly according to claim 6, in which the gel includes a material capable of reducing the tackiness of the gel before mechanical deformation of the gel.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 18 words
An assembly according to claim 4, in which the supports have means for sealing engagement to a cable.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 21 words
An assembly according to any preceding claim in which the sealing material is provided on the sheet at said edge portion.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 24 words
An assembly according to any preceding claim, in which the sealing material is heat-activatable, and which additionally comprises heating means for the sealing material.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 20 words
An assembly according to claim 11, in which the heating means comprises an electrical heater positioned at said edge portion.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 23 words
An assembly according to claim 12, in which the electrical heater comprises a conductive polymer composition in thermal contact with the edge portion.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 31 words
An assembly according to any preceding claim in which the sheet is substantially rectangular and has an edge portion that issubstantially V-shaped in cross section along at least two opposite edges.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 26 words
15 . An assembly according to claim 14 in which the sheet has an edge portion that is substantially V-shaped in cross-section along its four edges.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 22 words
An article according to any preceding claim, in which the casing is substantially rigid and in which the sheet is highly flexible.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 16 words
An article according to any preceding claim, in which the flexible sheet is substantially dimensionally non-recoverable.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 19 words
An article according to any preceding claim, in which the edge portions are provided with a resiliently expansible member.
Claim 20
Dependent Claim 37 words
An article for protecting a substrate which comprises; a backing; a gel on the backing; and a material at least partially covering a surface of the gel which can act to temporarily reduce tackiness of said surface.
Claim 21
Dependent Claim 37 words
An article for protecting a substrate which comprises; a backing; a gel on the backing; and a material at least partially covering a surface of the gel which can act to temporarily reduce tackiness of said surface.
Claim 22
Dependent Claim 21 words
An article according to claim 19, in which the material allows passage of gel therethrough on mechanical deformation of the article.
Claim 23
Dependent Claim 13 words
An article according to claim 20, in which the material comprises a net.
Claim 24
Dependent Claim 12 words
An article according to claim 20, in which the material is particulate.
