Abstract
Abstract A drive apparatus for driving an information recording medium encased in a cartridge. The cartridge (60) has a protection element (80) for protecting the recording medium (88). The drive apparatus has an action member (15) for functioning the protection element (80). The action member (15) projects out of the apparatus when the cartridge (60) is inserted into the apparatus, and retracts into the apparatus when the cartridge (60) is detached from the apparatus. The apparatus comprises a drive unit and a cartridge mounting unit disposed on a base body of the drive unit. The cartridge mounting unit has an operation button (33) disposed at a position which is furthest aparted from the attached cartridge and opposite to the base body with respect to the attached cartridge. When the recording medium is a flexible disk (88), the disk is pressed onto a recording or reproducing head by a pad (40). An arm (37) for supporting the pad (40) allows the pressure of the pad onto the disk to increase with rotation of the disk.
