Abstract

Abstract A device for providing a metered dose of medication for inhalation by the patient. The device includes a case (10) having a conduit passage (68) connected to a mouthpiece (16) and having an angled door (58) activated to open the conduit passage when the patient inhales through the mouthpiece. The angled door is connected to an electrical circuit which is closed when the patient inhales through the conduit. The closed electrical circuit releases a spring- tensioned medicinal cartridge (24) to force the cartridge release pin (46) into a conduit aperture to realease a dose of medicine into the conduit for inhalation by the patient.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 93 words
An inhalation device for dispensing a medicament from a metered dosage cartridge, comprising: a hand held unit having a mouthpiece (16) and connecting passageway (68) for ambient air to be inhaled characterised by triggering means (12, 14) supporting a biased metered dosage cartridge (24) and battery powered circuit means including switch means (64) and solenoid means (66), said cartridge including pin means (46) communicating with said passageway (68), whereby said switch means closes and activates said triggering means for dispensing a metered dosage of medicament into said passageway, upon inhaling through said mouthpiece.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 93 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
A device as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that said switch means is a reed switch (64).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
A device as claimed in claim 2, characterised in that said reed switch is activated by a movable magnet (56).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
A device as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that said triggering means comprises a pair of lever arm means (12, 14).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 31 words
A device as claimed in claim 4, characterised in that one of said pair of lever arm means (14) seats and holds in position said cartridge means in a yoke-like fork.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 44 words
A device as claimed in claim 5, characterised in that the said pin means (46) of the cartridge means (24) is aligned with an aperture in said passageway which aperture is a circular hole approximately equal to the diameter of said pin means (46).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said biased means for supporting said cartridge means is a compression spring (52).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 29 words
A device as claimed in claim 5, wherein the opposite end of said one of said pair of lever arm means (14) is provided with a finger loop (26).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 40 words
A device as claimed in claim 5, wherein the opposite end of the other of said one of said pair of lever arm means (12) is T-shaped at the tip portion so as to be manipulated by a users finger.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 28 words
A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said mouthpiece means (16) is large enough so as to fit over and seal about the user's mouth and nose.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 21 words
A device as claimed in claim 4, wherein said pair of lever arm means are notched so as to be latchable.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 24 words
A device as claimed in claim 5, wherein said lever arm means are interfaced by notching means which are adapted to be manually overridden.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 20 words
A device as claimed in claim 12, wherein said overriding action is performed by forcing said lever arm means apart.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 63 words
A device as claimed in claim 5, wherein said pair of lever arm means comprises a straight lever arm (12) and a curved lever arm (14), with the curved lever arm being said yoke-like fork; and said straight lever arm means is biased by means of a torsinal spring (36) in a direction so as to constantly interface said pair of lever arms.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 47 words
A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said switch means including pivotable door means (58) having a permanent magnet (56) for magnetically attracting contacts (64) of said switch means for closing same so as to energise said circuit means when a user inhales through said mouthpiece.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 28 words
A device as claimed in claim 15, wherein said door means and said mouthpiece are located within said connecting passageway of case means forming said hand held unit.
