L'écran (27) est associé à un étui (22) entourante un support de contacts (7, 1, 2) et glisse sur celui-ci lorsque la pression des gaz qu'il reçoit le déplace avec une vitesse qui est fonction de l'énergie de l'arc. Cet interrupteur est en particulier applicable aux appareils de protection devant limiter des courants accidentels ou à des appareils de coupure traversés par des courants établis relativement importants.
