Abstract

Abstract A method of increasing the accuracy of a length measuring system by calibrating the system against a more accurate reference system. A scale system in the length measuring system is made an absolute measurement scale system and is constructed in accordance with a principle which produces a gradually rising or falling error contribution. This can be achieved by constructing a mean value from separate readings of a least two scale graduations or divisions.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 90 words
A method of increasing the accuracy of a length measuring system by calibrating the system against a more accurate reference system, characterized by making the scale system incorporated in said length measuring system an absolute measurement scale system; causing the error contribution of the scale system to rise or fall gradually, by constructing a mean value over at least two scale graduations; allowing the error contribution to be greater than a predetermined error of the length measuring system, and storing the correction values obtained by calibration in a memory store.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 90 words
A method of increasing the accuracy of a length measuring system by calibrating the system against a more accurate reference system, characterized by making the scale system incorporated in said length measuring system an absolute measurement scale system; causing the error contribution of the scale system to rise or fall gradually, by constructing a mean value over at least two scale graduations; allowing the error contribution to be greater than a predetermined error of the length measuring system, and storing the correction values obtained by calibration in a memory store.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 60 words
A method according to Claim 1, characterized by making the distances between the calibrating positions along the scale for which the correction values are stored in the memory predetermined distances . of mutually equal magnitude, and by selecting said distances such that the greatest permitted error is not exceeded at any location between two mutually sequential calibration positions (Fig. 5).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 67 words
A method according to Claim 1, characterized by making the distances between the calibrating positions along the scale for which the correction values are stored in the memory variable distances and dependent on the steepness of the error curve such that the error occurring between two mutually sequential calibrating positions is smaller than or equal to half of a maximum permitted error for the scale (Fig. 6)
