Abstract
Abstract 57 A method fo detecting motion of a television image, due for example to panning of a television camera, uses a block matching technique in which frame difference summation data derived by summing the magnitudes of the differences between the pixel data of each of corresponding representative pixels in two successive frames of the television image are compared. The television image may be vertically divided into a rectangular array of blocks arranged horizontally and vertically, and a representative pixel is located at the centre of each block.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim
52 words
A method of detecting motion of a television image using block matching; characterised in that: the block matching is done by comparing frame difference summation data derived by summing the magnitude of the differences between the pixel data of each of corresponding representative pixels in two successive frames of the television image.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
52 words
A method of detecting motion of a television image using block matching; characterised in that: the block matching is done by comparing frame difference summation data derived by summing the magnitude of the differences between the pixel data of each of corresponding representative pixels in two successive frames of the television image.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
26 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein said frame difference summation data are stored in a memory (5,6) as a block matching table used for comparison.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
70 words
A method according to claim 2 wherein a movement vector representing the speed and direction of said motion is defined by a line from an origin defined in said block matching table to the coordinates of a local minimum value of said magnitudes, and said local minimum value is found by using the values stored in said block matching table to compute gradients in four directions in said television image.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
19 words
A method according to claim 3 wherein said directions are upwards, downwards, to the right, and to the left.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
41 words
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said television image is vertically divided into a rectangular array of blocks arranged horizontally and vertically, and a said representative pixel is located at the centre of each said block.
