Abstract

Abstract A method of measuring the orientation or dielectric characteristic of a dielectric sheet or web (3) is disclosed, which comprises the steps of inserting a sample portion of the dielectric sheet or web in a small clearance in a cavity resonator formed of a pair of waveguides (2) respectively having a transmitting antenna (5) and a receiving antenna (12). said waveguides being spaced apart from each other with their openings defining said clearance therebetween, irradiating said sample portion with frequency sweep type linearly polarized microwaves from the upper waveguide perpendicularly to said sample portion while producing a relative motion between the plane of polarization of microwaves and said sample portion around the axis of said cavity resonator, and measuring the resonance frequency of Q value of the microwaves received by the lower waveguide.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 126 words
A method of measuring the orientation or dielectric characteristic of a dielectric sheet or web, comprising the steps of inserting a sample portion of the dielectric sheet or web in a small clearance in a cavity resonator formed of a pair of waveguides respectively having a transmitting antenna and a receiving antenna, said waveguides being spaced apart from each other with their openings defining said clearance therebetween, irradiating said sample portion with frequency sweep type linearly polarized microwaves from the upper waveguide perpehdicularly to said sample portion while producing a relative motion between the plane of polarization of microwaves and said sample portion around the axis of said cavity resonator, and measuring the resonance frequency or Q value of the microwaves received by the lower waveguide.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 34 words
A method as set forth in Claim 1, wherein the sample portion of said sheet or web is rotated in said small clearance, thereby producing relative rotation between it and said plane of polarization.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 50 words
A method as set forth in Claim 1, wherein said sample portion is fixedly supported in said small clearance, while the portion of the cavity resonator including at least the transmitting antenna and receiving antenna is rotated, thereby producing relative rotation between said plane of polarization and said sample portion.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 66 words
A method as set forth in Claim 1, wherein the orientation of the constituent of one sample portion is measured during 18 0° rotation of said cavity resonator, whereupon the web or sheet including this sample portion is advanced one step to insert the subsequent sample portion into said small clearance and the orientation of the constituent of this portion is measured, such operation being repeated.
