Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 117 words
A method of reducing diffusion of alkali metal ions from a glass containing alkali metal ions into an overlying layer which method comprises providing between the glass and the overlying layer a transparent barrier coating containing silicon and oxygen applied by pyrolysis of a silane gas, which coating, when present on clear float glass up to 6mm thick, results in the coated glass having a light transmission of at least 75%, characterised in that the silane is pyrolysed on a glass surface above 600°C in the presence of a gaseous electron donating compound, whereby oxygen from the glass is incorporated with silicon to form a transparent barrier coating up to 50 nm thick on the glass surface.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 110 words
A method of coating a glass containing alkali metal ions in which a silane gas is pyrolysed on the glass surface above 600°C in the presence of a gaseous electron donating compound, whereby oxygen from the glass is incorporated with silicon to form on the glass surface a transparent barrier coating up to 50 nm thick containing silicon and oxygen, which coating, when present on clear float glass up to 6 mm thick, results in the coated glass having a light transmission of at least 75%, characterised in that a layer sensitive to the diffusion of alkali metal ions from the glass is subsequently applied over the coated glass surface.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method according to Claim 1 or 2 wherein the silane gas used is monosilane (SiH₄).
Claim 4
Independent Claim 19 words
A method according to any of Claims 1 to 3 wherein the silane is diluted with an inert gas.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 20 words
A method according to any of Claims 1 to 4 wherein the electron donating compound used does not contain oxygen.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method according to Claim 5 wherein the gaseous electron donating compound is an olefin containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method according to Claim 6 wherein the gaseous electron donating compound is ethylene.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 28 words
A method according to any of Claims 1 to 7 wherein the ratio of the gaseous electron donating compound to silane is from 0.5:1 to 15:1 by volume.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 25 words
A method according to any of Claims 1 to 8 wherein the transparent barrier coating is applied to glass not more than 2 mm thick.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 36 words
A method according to any of Claims 1 to 9 wherein the barrier coating is applied to a ribbon of float glass as it is advanced over the molten metal bath on which it is formed.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 44 words
A method according to any of Claims 2 to 10 in which the layer sensitive to the diffusion of alkali metal ions is applied by sputtering, by chemical vapour deposition or by spraying reactants in liquid or solid form onto the coated glass surface.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method according to Claim 11 wherein the said layer applied is a light transmitting layer of a doped metal oxide.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 119 words
Electroconductive flat glass comprising a glass substrate containing alkali metal ions, coated with a transparent barrier coating up to 50 nm thick containing silicon and oxygen by pyrolysis of a silane gas, which coating, when present on clear float glass up to 6mm thick, results in the coated glass having a light transmission of at least 75%, and an electroconductive metal oxide layer having a resistivity of less than 500 ohms per square over the barrier layer characterised in that the silane gas is pyrolysed on a glass surface above 600°C in the presence of a gaseous electron donating compound whereby oxygen from the glass is incorporated with silicon to form the transparent barrier coating on the glass surface.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 116 words
Infra red reflecting flat glass comprising a glass substrate containing alkali metal ions, coated with a transparent barrier layer up to 50 nm thick containing silicon and oxygen by pyrolysis of a silane gas, which coating, when present on clear float glass up to 6mm thick, results in the coated glass having a light transmission of at least 75%, and a light transmitting infra red reflecting doped metal oxide layer over the barrier coating characterised in that the silane gas is pyrolysed on a glass surface above 600°C in the presence of a gaseous electron donating compound whereby oxygen from the glass is incorporated with silicon to form the transparent barrier coating on the glass surface.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 101 words
Flat glass up to 2 mm thick with a transparent barrier coating up to 50 nm thick containing silicon and oxygen deposited by pyrolysis of a silane containing gas on the glass surface, which coating, when present on clear float glass up to 6mm thick, results in the coated glass having a light transmission of at least 75%, characterised in that the silane containing gas is pyrolysed on the glass surface above 600°C in the presence of a gaseous electron donating compound whereby oxygen from the glass is incorporated with silicon to form the transparent barrier coating on the glass surface.
