In a data entry system which employs data entry screens comprising a plurality of fields and corresponding labels identifying the fields wherein a user enters data, a field-directed screen help method for monitoring an input from the user requesting help, when a request for help is detected, saving the current content of the data entry screen, determining the current data entry field providing said help and upon the user pressing a preassigned response key, restoring the prior data entry screen, said providing help characterised in displaying a help text for said data entry field on the data entry screen at a location that does not obscure said current data entry field and its corresponding label; and; highlighting and visibly linking the help text to said current data entry field.
