Abstract

Abstract The internal combustion engine (1), particularly of diesel type, is provided with at least one pair of side-by-side cylinders (5,6) with their intake ports (7) disposed adjacent to each other; a first (5) and a second (6) cylinder of said pair are fed by a first and by a second intake duct (11, 12) of volute type which are connected to the adjacently disposed intake ports (7) provided in the engine cylinder head (2); this latter is provided with at least one cavity (15, 16) arranged to connect together the first and second intake duct (11, 12) by defining at least one tangential communication port (18, 19) between them, so that during the staggered intake stages of the first and second cylinder (5, 6), the air is conveyed from one to the other duct (11, 12) to increase the vorticity.

Independent Claim 182 words
A high-turbulence internal combustion engire(l), particularly of the high-speed direct injection diesel type, comprising a first (3) and a second (4) combustion chamber which are side-by-side and are each provided with a respective intake port (7) and a respective exhaust port (8), and a cylinder head (2) in which there are provided said ports (7, 8) and at least one first intake duct (11) of volute type connected to said intake port (7) of said first combustion chamber (3), and a second intake duct (12) of volute type connected to said intake port (7) of said second combustion chamber (4), characterised in that said intake ports (7) and said first and second intake duct (11, 12) of said first and second chamber (3, 4) are disposed in adjacent side-by-side positions between the respective said exhaust ports (8) of said first and second chamber (3, 4), said first and second volute duct (11, 12) being orientated in the reverse direction to each other and said cylinder head (2) comprising means (15, 16) for connecting together said first and second volute duct (11, 12).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 182 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 57 words
An engine (1) as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that said first and second chamber (3, 4) are defined respectively by a first (5) and by a second (6) cylinder of said engine(1) and by said cylinder head (2), said engine (1) comprising a plurality of pairs of said side-by-side first and second cylinder (5, 6).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 59 words
An engine (1) as claimed in claim 2, characterised in that said cylinder head (2) comprises, for each said pair of side-by-side cylinders (5, 6), at least one cavity (15) provided in a position corresponding with the intake ports (7) and defining at least one tangential communication port (18) connecting together said first and second intake duct (11, 12).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 58 words
An engine (1) as claimed in claim 2, characterised in that said cylinder head (2) comprises, for each said pair of side-by-side cylinders (5, 6), two cavities (15, 16) provided in positions corresponding with the intake ports (7) and defining a pair of tangential communication ports (18, 19) connecting together said first and second intake duct (11, 12).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 101 words
An engine (1) as claimed in one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the thermodynamic cycles of said first and second cylinder (5, 6) of each pair of side-by-side cylinders are staggered by an extent such as to maintain the intake port (7) of the first cylinder (5) closed when that of the second cylinder (6) is open and vice versa, so that the air conveyed by said first volute intake duct (11) is conveyed tangentially into said second volute intake duct (12) through said communication ports (18, 19) and drawn in by said second cylinder (6), and vice versa.
Claim 7
