Der Katalysator enthält ein oder mehrere Edelmetalle auf einem Träger und ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Träger einen inerten Grundträger enthält, auf den eine Zwischenschicht aus γ-Al 2 O 3 , einen Siliciumdioxid oder einem Aluminiumsilicat, gegebenenfalls zusammen mit einem Oxid des Lanthans undioder der Lanthaniden aufgebracht ist, und daß in oder auf dieser Zwischenschicht ein oder mehrere Edelmetalle aus der Gruppe Ruthenium, Rhodium, Palladium und/oder Platin aufgebracht sind.
