Abstract In a driving method of an optical switch element for controlling a quantity of transmission light between opposed electrodes by interposing a transparent, high dielectric material (4) between the opposed electrodes (6a, 6b) and applying a positive or negative voltage between the opposed electrodes, (by changing over a switch 13 from a terminal a to terminal b or terminal c) the improvement wherein a period in which the opposed electrodes are substantially short-circuited is disposed in order to make it possible to either reduce or eliminate stored charge. This method can be applied in a printer using the optical switch element.
Method of driving an optical switch element (14) by interposing a transparent, high dielectric material (4) between opposed electrodes (6a, 6b) and applying a positive or negative voltage between said opposed electrodes so as to control the quantity of transmission light between said opposed electrodes, the improvement wherein a period in which said opposed electrodes (6a, 6b) are substantially short-circuited is disposed.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
28 words
Method of driving an optical switch element as defined in claim 1 wherein short-circuit of said opposed electrodes (6a, 6b) is effected by connecting electrically said opposed electrodes.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
137 words
Printer for printing a desired print pattern on paper, including at least: a light source (8); an optical switch element (14) for controlling selectively the quantity of transmission light between opposed electrodes (6a, 6b) with respect to incident light from said light source, by interposing a transparent, high dielectric material (4) between said opposed electrodes and applying a positive or negative voltage between said opposed electrodes; and a photosensitive drum (16) to which the transmission light of said optical switch element (14) is radiated; the improvement wherein a period in which said opposed electrodes (6a, 6b) are substantially short-circuited is disposed in the driving period of said optical switch element corresponding at least one of the non-print regions at the leading (17a) and trailing end (17b) portions of said paper among the non-print regions of said paper.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
The printer as defined in claim 3 wherein short-circuit of said opposed electrodes (6a, 6b) is effected by connectin electrically said opposed electrodes.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
62 words
The printer as defined in claim 3 wherein the driving period of said optical switch element (14) corresponding to said non-print regions include mixedly a first period in which said opposed electrodes are substantially short-circui and a second period in which a positive or negative voltage is applied between said opposed electrodes so as to substant. ially cut off said transmission light.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
17 words
The printer as defined in claim 5 wherein said first period is longer than said second period.
