Abstract

Abstract @ An HIPR emulsion of bitumen in water is prepared by a method which comprises directly mixing 70 to 98% by volume of bitumen having a viscosity in the range 200 to 500,000 mPa.s at the mixing temperature with 30 to 2% by volume of an aqueous solution of an emulsifying surfactant, percentages being expressed as percentages by volume of the total mixture. Mixing is effected under low shear conditions in the range 10 to 1,000 reciprocal seconds in such manner that an emulsion is formed comprising highly distorted bitumen droplets having mean droplet diameters in the range 2 to 50 micron separated by thin films of water. The emulsions can be cut back to provide stable emulsions of lower bitumen content which are useful in road- making and the formation of protective coatings.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 116 words
A method for the preparation of an HIPR emulsion of bitumen in water characterised by the fact that the method comprises directly mixing 70 to 98X by weight of bitumen with 30 to 2X by weight of an aqueous solution of an emulsifying surfactant, percentages being expressed as percentages by weight of the total mixture; the bitumen having a viscosity in the range 200 to 500,000 mPa.s at the mixing temperature and mixing being effected under low shear conditions in the range 10 to 1,000 reciprocal seconds in such manner that an emulsion is formed comprising distorted bitumen droplets having mean droplet diameters in the range 2 to 50 micron separated by thin films of water.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 27 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein the feedstock comprises 80% to 95% by weight of bitumen, expressed as a percentage by weight of the total mixture.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 25 words
A method according to either of the preceding claims wherein mixing is effected under low shear conditions in the range 50 to 250 reciprocal seconds.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 22 words
A method according to any of the preceding claims wherein the bitumen has a viscosity in the range 1000 to 250,000 mPa.s.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 17 words
A method according to any of the preceding claims wherein the surfactant is a mixed anionic/non-ionic surfactant.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 17 words
A method according to any of claims 1 to 4 wherein the surfactant is a cationic surfactant.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 46 words
A method for the production of an emulsion of bitumen in water characterised by the fact that a HIPR emulsion of bitumen in water is prepared by a method according to any of the preceding claims and subsequently diluted with an aqueous solution of a surfactant.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 38 words
An HIPR emulsion of bitumen in water characterised by the fact that it contains 80% to 98X by weight bitumen, the emulsion comprising distorted bitumen droplets having a mean particle diameter in the range 2 to 50 microns.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 38 words
An HIPR emulsion of bitumen in water characterised by the fact that it contains 80% to 98X by weight bitumen, the emulsion comprising distorted bitumen droplets having a mean particle diameter in the range 2 to 50 microns.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 14 words
An HIPR emulsion according to claim 8 containing 85% to 95% by weight bitumen.
