Abstract
Abstract A latch element (20) projecting from a pedal (14) has latch nbers (24) which are resiliently deflectable. A socket nent (30) on the sole (16) of a rider's foot releasably and aceably couples with the latch element (20) for pedalling on, and releases from the latch element under non-ped- g loads.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
104 words
Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 1, comprising the further improvement wherein said socket recess has A. a latch-seating portion which includes said first and second latch seats and is arranged for receiving said latch means, and B. a front guiding portion extending forwardly of said seat portion for guiding said latch means into and out of said seat portion. 3. Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 2, comprising the further improvement wherein said socket recess further has a downwardly projecting back wall portion rearward of said seating portion for abutment against said forward thrust means of latch means seated in said socket means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
52 words
Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 2 having the further improvements wherein A. said latch means has upwardly-facing follower means, and B. said front guiding portion has downwardly-facing camming means extending longitudinally along said front guiding portion and providing said recess with progressive depth from the front thereof to said seating portion.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
28 words
Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 1, having the further improvement wherein said latch member comprise first and second resilient projections aligned and resiliently-deflectable along said latch axis.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
36 words
. Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 1, having the further improvement comprising mounting means for adjustably mounting said latch means to said pedal with selective positioning of said latch axis relative to said pedal axis.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
26 words
Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 1, having the further improvement wherein said socket means includes a shoe having a sole forming said latch-receiving recess therein.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
58 words
Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 1, having the further improvement wherein at least one of said latch seats comprises A. first detent means arranged to seat one said latch member with a first resilient bias, and B. second detent means communicating with said first detent for seating said one latch member with a second, greater resilient bias.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
32 words
Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 1 having the further improvement wherein said latch seat has means for providing first and second latching engagements of a latch member, with different resilient bias.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
27 words
Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 1, having the further improvement comprising bearing means for permitting limited rotation of said latch axis relative to said pedal axis.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
40 words
Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said latch-receiving recess of said socket means further includes first and second opposing side walls, disposed at selected angles relative to said latch axis to control the releasing of said latch means.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
37 words
Bicycle pedalling apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said socket means further includes at least one port communicating between said recess and the outside of said socket means to transport debris and avoid fouling of said apparatus.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
107 words
Cycling socket apparatus for releasably and replaceably coupling a cyclist's foot to a latching pedal that revolves about a normally-horizontal pedal axis and that has a first and second latch means directed along a latch axis longitudinal with said pedal axis, said apparatus having the improvement comprising A. socket means having a latch-receiving recess with first and second axially-aligned latch seats for releasably and replaceably couplingly seating said latch means, B. said socket means resisting unseating of said latch means coupled therewith, and transmitting to said pedal a cycling thrust in response to pedalling loads, and releasing, from said latch means in response to selected non-pedalling loads.
