Independent Claim
271 words
A system for controlling an electromagnetic clutch for a motor vehicle having an infinitely variable belt-drive transmission which has a drive range, reverse range and neutral range, and a selector lever for selecting the ranges, the system comprising: vehicle speed detecting means (62, 65) for producing a vehicle speed signal; first switch means (51, 52, 53) for detecting the position of the selector lever and for producing output signals; second switch means (55, 56) for producing output signal dependent on the depression of an accelerator pedal of the vehicle; first control means (66, 68) arranged to receive the output signals from the first switch means (51, 52, 53) for producing a reverse clutch current signal when the selector lever is at the neutral position; second control means (68, 69) arranged to receive the outputs of the vehicle speed detecting means (62, 65) and the second switch means (55, 56) for producing a vehicle start clutch current signal when the accelerator pedal is depressed at a low vehicle speeds; third control means (68, 70) arranged to receive the output of the vehicle speed detecting means (62, 65) and the second switch means (55, 56) for producing a small drag current signal dependent at low vehicle speeds when the accelerator pedal is released; fourth control means (68, 71, 72) responsive to the output of the vehicle speed detecting means (62, 65) for producing a lock-up current signal at middle or high vehicle speeds; and output decision means supplied with each of the current signals for controlling the current passing through a coil in the electromagnetic clutch in dependence on the supplied current signal.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
58 words
A system for controlling an electromagnetic clutch as claimed in claim 1 further comprising engine speed detecting means (60, 64) for producing an output signal dependent on engine speed, the second control means being responsive to the output signal of the engine speed detecting means (60, 64) to increase the clutch current with increase of the engine speed.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
59 words
A system for controlling an electromagnetic clutch as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the fourth control means (68, 71, 72) produces two kinds of lock-up engagement current signals, one of which provides a small lock-up current when the accelerator pedal is released, and the other provides a large lock-up engagement current when the accelerator pedal is depressed.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
40 words
A system as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein the second control means is responsive to an output from an air conditioner switch (58), for altering the clutch current signal when the air conditioner switch (58) is closed.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
38 words
A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the second control means is responsive to an output of choke switch (75), for altering the clutch current when the choke switch (75) is closed.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
36 words
A motor vehicle comprising, an engine, an infinitely variable belt-drive transmission, an electromagnetic clutch between an output of the engine and the transmission, and a system for controlling that clutch as claimed in any preceeding claims.
