Abstract

Abstract ® A steering system is disclosed wherein elastic means and restraining means in the form of a damper (23) are arranged in a steering effort transmission system. The elastic means allows elastic deformation in the transmission system and the restraining means restrains such elastic deformation in response to a rate of displacement of a steering wheel (21) or a vehicle speed of a vehicle.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 84 words
A steering system for a vehicle, comprising: a steering wheel (21); means for transmitting a steering effort applied to said steering wheel to a change-direction road wheel of the vehicle, said steering effort transmitting means including a steering shaft assembly (11) and a gear housing (17) having received therein a steering gear (12,13) ; and elastic means (20;42) for allowing elastic deformation of said steering effort transmitting means; charac- terized by restraining means (23;41) for restraining said elastic deformation allowed by said elastic means.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 84 words
A steering system for a vehicle, comprising: a steering wheel (21); means for transmitting a steering effort applied to said steering wheel to a change-direction road wheel of the vehicle, said steering effort transmitting means including a steering shaft assembly (11) and a gear housing (17) having received therein a steering gear (12,13) ; and elastic means (20;42) for allowing elastic deformation of said steering effort transmitting means; charac- terized by restraining means (23;41) for restraining said elastic deformation allowed by said elastic means.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 1, charac- terized in that said restraining means (23;41) is operable in response to the steering effort applied to said steering wheel and provides a force opposing to said elastic deformation, which force becomes large as a rate of displacement of the steering wheel becomes large.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 65 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 2, charac- terized in that said restraining means comprising a mounting apparatus (16) which includes a rack mount insulator (20;20a;20b) mounted between a vehicle body (15) of the vehicle and said gear housing (17), and a damper (23) which is mounted between the vehicle body and said gear housing in a parallel relationship with said rack mount insulator.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 72 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 1, charac- terized in that said restraining means includes a vehicle speed sensor (38) sensing a vehicle speed of the vehicle and generating a sensor output signal, rack mount insulator means (20a,20b) for resiliently supporting said gear housing on a vehicle body of the vehicle, a damper (23) and means (36,35;39) for controlling the characteristic of said damper in response to said sensor output signal.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 45 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 3, charac- terized in that a force produced by said damper for restraining the elastic deformation is large when the vehicle runs at low vehicle speeds as compared to that when the vehicle runs at high vehicle speeds.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 4, charac- terized in that said restraining means (39) completely hampers said resilient deformation when the vehicle runs at low vehicle speeds.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 55 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 3, charac- terized in that said damper (23) has a cylinder body (27), a piston (29) slidably disposed in said cylinder body to define two fluid-filled chambers (30a, 30b) communicating with each other via a fluid passage (32) and means (32a) for restricting fluid flow through said passage.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 125 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 2, charac-terized in that said restraining means comprises an elastic member (42) drivingly interconnected between two component parts (40a,40b) of said steering shaft assembly and a damper (41) including a chamber defined between the two component parts of said steering shaft assembly, two diametrically opposed vanes (46a) extending from one of the two component parts into said chamber and two diametrically opposed vanes (46b) extending from the other of the two component parts into said chamber, said vanes defining within said chamber four sub-chambers (44a,44b,44c,44d) filled with fluid, at least said vanes of the one of the two component parts being formed with restricted holes (47), respectively, for allowing restricted fluid flow communication between the adjacent two sub-chambers.
